Still feeding every 2 hours

Hi ladies, my 6 wo is still feeding every two hours even at night. She sleeps in my arms or on my chest for most naps. There is not long stretch though sometimes she will go 9 pm to 12 am. The main problem with bedtime is that she takes an hour to get to sleep. We feed around 6, she naps 30 mins or so, then we feed around 7, them do bath, diaper, pjs and song and then the long and painful process of getting her to sleep. Normally she exhausts herself by 9. This is all in my arms, I am not trying to let her CIO. So any suggestions? During the day she eats every 2 hours or so and only sleeps for an hour. We swaddle at night but by 2 am she is frantically trying to get her arms out and kicking her legs to fart. We don't swaddle during the day and it's actually much easier to get her to sleep. Please help, I want to use the EASY routine but I can't get her up to the lengths of time required to do it. Also I know my supply is good and her latch seems to be great. Help TIA

  • What are you swaddling in? We use the swaddle sleep sack for DS so he can still kick the farts out.

  • My daughter was a crappy sleeper for a long time. She actually slept much better with her arms unswaddled, when swaddled she spent all night fighting it.

  • Is she sleeping in a crib? Bassinet? Have you tried a RockNPlay? DD sleeps in one and sleeps well.
  • Jack fusses big time in the middle of the night to get the farts out. Grunts, sometimes cries. I dont pick up him unless his eyes are open and he is awake. Eventually he gets them out and goes back to sleep. Is she awake when she is trying or crying in her sleep?

Jack eats atleast every 2 hours but at night I can get a 4 hour stretch out of him.

  • We use the swaddle me thing with the Velcro. I thought maybe because she could kick that's why she hated the swaddle so I've also tried blankets and I am thinking about getting the miracle blanket. We just lay down for a nap in a swaddle and she again woke up fighting it. It starts out eyes closed but then she gets more and more frustrated and then eyes open and crying. She is still sleeping on me for every nap. I have tried to get her in a basinette but with such short sleep periods it normally jut results in her taking a catnap. The only time I can get a long sleep from her is in the carseat attached to the stroller but when it stops she wakes up. Also she hates her swing and we haven't tried the pack and play but it's more about getting her to sleep that is te hard part. Every time it takes at least 40 minutes if not an hour. Is this normal?

  • Our little guy sleeps a 4 hr stretch typically. After that I usually only get half an hr to an hr from the time I put him down till he wakes up.

The RnP is definitely a good investment!

  • Thanks I didn't realise that feeding every two hours at 6 weeks was still normal....yikes. Should I put her down awake but drowsy in the rnp? Or will I still have to get her all the way to sleep?

It's rare that V will fall asleep not on my boob. EASY doesn't work for us because she usually goes down that way. Do you bed share? V sleeps longer and deeper when she is in with me, it's not for everyone but I love having baby snuggles throughout the night.
Also, don't forget right now is the 6 week growth spurt for our LO's, so all bets are off!

Yes I do bed share though I think that might be why she feeds so frequently at night. She is right there and sneaks on in her sleep. Most of the time I don't even notice until she's already latched. It's pretty adorable seeing her root in her sleep. Especially when I wear a nursing bra to bed and she latched on through the fabric.

I was thinking if I could get her in the basinette which is pulled up level with the bed she wouldn't feed just because I was there but I am so terrified to mess around with her night sleep since that's the only sleep she gets. I tried to extend the time between day feeds but that's when she hit her growth spurt, which I think has passed.

  • The miracle blanket advertises that it is good for gas/colic. I guess the wrap around the belly is supposed to help, although it sounds from your experience its the opposite.
I would get her out of your bed, so she doesn't get to snack whenever she wants. I have learned to ignore J's initial grunting and rooting and he will go back to sleep for an hour or so. We have gone from every two hours, to every 4. Every once in a while ill get 5 or 6 but mostly every 4.

My biggest game changers, RnP, pacifier, a good swaddle esp the miracle blanket, and learning to not jump up as soon as he starts grunting.

I have the swaddle mes and he hated them. Would scream and kick and all. I thought the miracle blanket would be a waste of money but he loves it. Doesn't even fuss when it goes on, like he did with receiving blanket.

All kids are different though and your girl may hate these things. Eating every 2 hours is normal at 6 wks. J eats every 2 during the day but has started stretching it at night. I think getting her out of your bed and not having such easy access may help. Good luck

In the beginning I had to get him all the way to sleep. Now I can put him down drowsy. He usually will fall asleep on the boob. Sometimes when I put him down he wakes up but will go back to sleep after.
During the day however, he falls asleep on me and if I put him down he usually wakes up.

  • My 7 week old is the same way. It takes an hour or more to get her to sleep. I wish I had answers for you but I'm in the same boat. Swaddle not swaddled it doesn't matter she only sleeps in my arms n it's just a Catnap the minute I put her in the crib her eyes are wide open n she cries. Hang in there.

  • W will fight the swaddle me but not the miracle blanket. I think it's because it's a tighter swaddle. And every 2 hours during the day is totally normal. She smells you at night so that's most likely why she wants to nurse so often at night.

Get a woombie. It's a much tighter swaddle and baby can't get their arms out

Same here. I was going to try the woombie, it looks great but I didn't know the stores didn't sell it. So I got the miracle blanket and it has worked. We got a swaddle sleep sack though but haven't tried it. I don't know if he will like the Velcro though.

  • Have you tried doing the bath and everything before you nurse her to sleep? It sounds like she isn't eating again after she eats at 7 before she goes down at 9, am I correct? If so then she is really going closer to 4 hrs without eating so maybe you could get a 4 hr stretch of sleep if you nurse her down.

C used to eat every 2 hrs at night too, with the occasional 3 hr stretch...it does get better slowly! But I basically have to nurse her to sleep at night, it calms her down more than anything else. We take almost 2 hours from bath time to when she finally falls asleep for her long stretch, so that is pretty normal. Also, C used to fall asleep at 7...more like 9 now... and even though it feels like it is SO early go to sleep then so you can catch up!

  • We were having the exact same problem with LJ until last week (she's 8 weeks now). I'm not sure if this is a coincidence or not, but she started sleeping for longer stretches at night when we began a pretty strict bedtime routine. At 8:30 I give her a tummy massage to get the gases out, we give her a bath, I massage her whole body and bundle her up in a couple layers and a swaddler (she LOVES being warm), then I give her a warm bottle with some gas drops and put her down in her crib with white noise in the background. If we don't do any of that, she will not sleep at all at night! She also started eating more during the day (she still eats every 2 hours, but she eats more per feeding), but she kind of started doing that on her own, so I'm thinking that it's just age.
