PG after IF, what BC?

Mobile: PG after IF, what BC are you using?

LOL, that's a lot of acronyms in one title!

We want more children but don't want 2u2, otherwise we would probably just wing it and see what happens. I had a horrible time coming off BCP last time so I don't want to do that again.  I also plan to breast feed for the first year, so that should help.

With our MFI dx it's pretty unlikely that we would get pregnant on our own before we were "ready" but ever since MH had his varicocelectomy his count, mot and morph have gone up slightly each analysis.

For you Sep moms who got PG after an IF diagnosis/treatment, what are your plans for birth control after your baby gets here, if you are wanting more children?

Re: PG after IF, what BC?

  • None for us.  After paying over 8K to GET pregnant, if an oops pregnancy happened for free earlier than planned, we would be delighted.

  • Due to PCOS it took six years and many tears to conceive our first DD. So, after we was born we chose no BC at all. We honestly didn't think it would happen for us again (and neither did my doctor).

But guess what? Three months PP I was pregnant with our second. It was such a blessing, but SUCH a big surprise!

After DD2 was born, I went on Mirena. I had it for 3 years before removing it. After removal it took only three months to conceive again.

I had a really good experience with the Mirena. No side-effects and three years without Aunt Flo was pretty sweet. I'll likely end up with one again this time.

  • Most likely I'll do the mini pill (Progesterone only). I've tolerated bcp well before and my doctor seemed to feel it would not interfere with breast feeding. She seems enthusiastic about an IUD like Mirena, but it's not for me. I can't get past the idea that I'd still ovulate and therefore could possibly have egg and sperm meet but just not be able to implant. If it makes any difference, my IF didn't show up until after I'd had two losses.

  • No plan for BC.  Like a PP mentioned, we spent a lot of money on testing, IUI, and such so if I get a second baby for free it will be another huge blessing!  I hate what BC does to my body and condoms make sex unenjoyable.  I'd prefer not to have 2u2 either, but I will take what God gives!  :)  Good luck!  I have heard good things about IUD's

  • We are just going to use condoms for now. Maybe after a year we will let those go, but I definitely do not want to be pregnant within a year if at all.

  • I did not have IF but opened this thread anyway for some unexplainable reason.... Anyway, I'm answering because I also did not want to get on the pill again only to possibly have to get off it again soonish for #2.

First, I decided we were relatively safe as long as my period had not returned due to BFing. That was 7 mo. Risky, especially as time wore on (you ovulate before your first period...!) but we weren't having sex that often so it wasn't that big of a risk. Then we used condoms and/or charting to avoid. I also got a diaphragm because then you don't have "reduced sensation" from the condom, but that was sort of a pain in the butt; I never got good at using it.

If you are quite active with your husband then you might want a good solution--like even better than condoms--but if you don't do it that often you can get away with just charting.

  • I didn't have an official diagnosis of IF, but with only 3 or so periods a year, previous pregnancy loss, and one ovary removed, conception isn't all that simple for us. I actually really like sex with condoms :: I know, I'm weird, but the no dripping is great :: so we'll probably do that for the first 6 months or so then go back to unprotected sex. 2 under 2 would definitely not be ideal for me, but it's so unlikely with our circumstances that I'm willing to take the risk and if we got preggo before we were ready I'd just take it as a happy surprise.
  • I'll most likely get an IUD. I would like to just let it be and see what happens but I'll be going back on my RA, lupus and narcolepsy med so I cannot get pregnant while on these meds. My OB I had discussed my best option and it's pointing that direction.

ETA: two of my specialist won't start me back on my meds until I have a reliable form of BC.

  • This is a good question, and one I hadn't thought of.  It took us almost three years and one loss before we got pregnant now. We were seeing an RE but got lucky on a break, right before we were prepared to try IVF.  I would prefer not to have 2u2, but I'm 37 now and I think I don't have time to mess around if we want a second.  I guess we won't use any BC? Terrifying thought. Lol
  • I'm not really into charting to avoid I guess. After charting during TTC for so long it just sounds like too much work, plus I'd then have to not have sex during the time that my body gears me up to desire sex.
We will probably go back to condoms as lots of pp will. I am with one pp, I sort of like using condoms, it's my husband who puts up a fight!

Thanks for all your insight ladies!

I did not have an IF diagnosis, so I hope my post isn't frowned upon. It took me a pretty long time for my body to regulate after BCP's and it took us 8 months and a m/c to conceive this LO. I don't plan on ever going back on BCP's. We plan on using breastfeeding to avoid and then when my cycle comes back we will be using condoms and I will try to chart again.

You should still temp and pay close attention to your cm. I never got my period after dd but got preg with ds when she was 8 months. You can ovulate but not menstrate.
