Cloth Diapering

Getting hubby on board

Hello, I am due in Oct with my first. I've always been really interested in CDing and found the CD 101 on Pinterest and that pretty much sealed the deal for me. My hubby however is totally not on board. What makes matters worse is that when the topic gets brought up with our friends who are new parents everyone thinks I'm nuts for wanting to CD. It doesn't do much for validating my point of view. Were any of you in a similar predicament? Do people think you are crazy for CDing? What do you say in reply?

Also, in the CD 101 it says for babies under 6months that are breastfed and not eating solids that you can simply wash on cold then hot with extra rinse and not have to look at the poo or do anything. Is this for real? I tell that to other parents and they say "yeah right."

Lastly, I know there are several types of CD, and I was reading that you should get samples to see what you will like. How do you go about doing that? Shouldn't you have your mind made up and the dipes stockpiled before baby gets here?

Thanks for all of your knowledge !

Diaperjunction.com has a program where you can try diapers for 30 days and send them back. It's $150 but they give you $140 back when you send the diapers back so check that out.

My DH was not sure about CDIng at all. I bought 5 or 6 and we tried them. They were all pockets because I knew we would never stick with prefolds and my sitters would not go for them. We used them for a couple days and love them. We ordered 20 more. Dh now cannot figure out why more people don't use them. And he launders them! Show him the figures on money savings. We have spent under $200 and those will last a long time. We did all Alvas and Kawaiis.

Yep, many thought I was insane at first.  My mom told me that I would give it up and my friends didn't understand why I wouldn't just go buy disposables.  I would just keep talking about CDing.  I actually got one of my friends to CD her son at the last minute and she absolutely loves it.  If someone says that it's gross or they don't understand why I would want to CD, I just smile and nod.  I really don't take anyone's opinions to heart.

I got DH on board by talking to him about the cost savings and got him ok with prefolds and covers by watching the 7 part Cloth Diapering 101 series on YouTube.  He now tries to educate his friends on CDing (even though some aren't even married yet!).

Yep, before solids you don't need to worry about the poop.  The first cold rinse or prewash will rinse out the diapers.  Be sure to include a spin and drain of the water before you start your main wash.  The main wash is hot water and detergent with 2 rinses.

For my NB stash, I have prefolds and flats with covers.  They are a safe bet because they are customizable to your LO.  The reason why you shouldn't get all of one brand of diaper is that you don't really know how they will fit on your LO.  If you want to do prefolds and covers the whole time, you totally can.  People usually switch to pockets or AIOs as the baby gets bigger to make it easier on others who don't know how to fold or if their daycare requires a certain type of diaper.

There are different ways you can build your stash.  What I done is to research a ton on what I wanted and which brands are good.  Then when a sale would come up, I would get a couple.  My stash is a mix of prefolds and flats with covers and pockets.  If something doesn't work, I can sell those to get more of the ones that do work.  You can also do a diaper trial.  There are a bunch of online stores that offer different kind of trials.  You can try out a package or pick which diapers you want to try.  It's all personal preference what you want to do.

All of this. Except it was my stepmom who thought I was crazy, and my DH won't do prefolds. But he does try to talk all his buddies into it now!

EBF or FF poop is water soluble, disappears after a cold rinse. We're in to solids now, and we're using flushable liners until we get the sprayer installed. It's been a good experience, and I've definitely touched less poop than my friends that do sposies!

  • DH thinks I'm crazy for wanting to CD and so do most of the people our age so I try not to bring it up.  Interestingly, both our moms are totally cool with it since they did it themselves.  I basically just told him I'm doing it and he'll have to deal.  In our relationship, the reality is I will be the one buying, washing, and changing most diapers anyway (he's "very chill" and I'm super type-A).  He's come around to the idea.  In consideration of his aversion to CDing, I did buy a bunch of swaddlebees simplex newborn AIO's, Fuzzibunz pockets, and kissaluvs fitteds in addition to some prefolds.  That way he can have something easier to use when he changes diapers.  It's more expensive than just prefolds but I think it's worth it if it makes him more comfortable.  Once he saw the simplex newborn AIO's he seemed to calm down a bit.  The are so cute!  Now I just need to convince him to try wool covers....
  • We had talked about it early on-  and I don't remember who first brought it up.  He was on board for environmental reasons & for savings.   However, I'm the one who researched everything like crazy.   Any time I was wide awake at 3 am and knew I wasn't falling back asleep any time soon- I compiled websites and looked things up.

And right around 20 or 22 weeks, we went to a Cloth Diapering 101 class at a local cloth diaper store.  It was awesome.  I walked in feeling overwhelmed, and left thinking "ok, this isn't going to be that bad."  DH however...  he left completely overwhelmed but still willing to use them!!

I googled columbus/cloth diaper and came up with this place:

    https://www.sproutsoup.com/shop/Sprout-Soup-Location.html

They have a Saturday intro class and if I remember correctly that address is north of campus, south end of Clintonville??

  •  we just started when DD started solids. when her poo got more solid, a friend gave me a couple to try just because I was curious and I really like it.

DH will take them off and leave them out for me to deal with, but he won't put them back on or launder them.  its kinda my "hobby" with the baby. that being said, when I eventually go back to work, our daycare is ok with them and we use all pockets.

I like that, for the most part, when they eat more solid foods, you can just pick up the poo with a wipe and put it in the trash with the disposies.

  • I don't really go looking for validation from other people so I tend not to bring it up. Among our friends, people are pretty respectful of each other's choices, especially as parents everyone has had the experience of being judged for one thing or another. If anything, people are curious and it's a good opportunity to educate and inform.

DH was hesitant because it sounded like extra work to him. But once we did our trial, he actually said he liked prefolds best. And since we have moved to the big city and decided to go carless, I think he appreciates that it's one less bulk item that we have to constantly stock up on, and a lot less garbage that he has to haul to the curb each week.

I do most of the diapering, so it's really my decision in the end.

  • People think I am crazy for wanting to cloth diaper. I was at a baby shower from an old neighborhood (she's on kid number 3), and her parent's were like what? You are going to do what? I just smiled and chuckled on the inside and thought, if your daughter cloth diapered we wouldn't need these awkward diaper q parties....

I've always been an independent person and when I make my mind I'm pretty much stubborn on it. I very rarely turn back, cause I hate being wrong tehe. So I will find a way to make cloth diapering to work on my lo.

  • Hi There!

I got lucky. Super lucky in the fact that my DH is completely 100% on board. We're somewhat eco-friendly here anyway, reusable water bottles, we don't use paper plates/bowls/cups, etc. so he was already on board with the eco-friendly part, but when I explained the cost-effectiveness on top of the nasty chemicals and such that are in sposies, that sealed the deal. The only thing left to do was show him the CD 101 videos on YouTube to explain the different types and how they work, and now we're both on the same page.

With the exception of friends you find who share your CD ideal, people are going to think you're crazy. Had I not gotten DH completely on board, he would probably have jumped ship when we told our closest couple our plans to CD because she immediately freaked out, as did he, talking about how they don't work and there's constant blow outs, etc etc etc. I just smiled and nodded and went on talking about something else. I will sit there and silently judge their use of disposables as I'm sure they'll sit there and silent judge our use of cloth. Oh well.

As for the different types, different companies will let you try different kinds. Other posters I'm sure will have more information than I do. I do know our plan is to use primarily prefolds and covers, with some pockets for sitters and grandparents and other people who "want" to change the baby but are freaked out by the folding and snappis.

In the end, it's about what's best for baby, and in our opinion, that's cloth. There is a ton of research out there that tells you all of the benefits and the fact that they greatly outweigh the negatives.

We've gotten very little feedback about CDing, thankfully!  Both of our parents used CDs in the late 70s/early 80s and my SIL used a diaper service for a year that her mom gifted her.  A couple of my friends thought I was a little nuts, but they were good about keeping their opinions to themselves. :)  Our stash is similar to AFwifelife's - primarily prefolds and covers with a few aplix pockets for daycare.  I have a few flats (LOVE these for stuffing my kawaii p&ns) and am currently collecting fitted diapers (my fav) and wool covers.  I also need to get 6-8 more pockets for daycare.  Now that DD is close to 5 mo old, I know her shape and based on others reviews I can easily determine which style dipes will likely work well for her. My DH claimed he wasn't doing diapers at all, whatever dude. ;)  When I explained the cost savings he was like "ok fine".  Not terribly enthused but he does them just fine.  I initially got pockets thinking he would prefer them, but he grabs a prefold 99% of the time!
