Re: Milk?

  • We were told she could drink whatever milk the rest of the family does now. She did say if we dropped her down to skim milk, that we may want to do it gradually because she might not like it right away (start with 2%, then 1%, etc). We're down to 1% now and she doesn't seem to mind so far.

  • Our pedi said 2% now. He said he only recommends sticking with whole milk if the child is low on the chart for weight.

  • We were told it was ok to switch to 2%, but we still offer them whole milk.

  • We have been on 1% since either the 15th or 18th month because of our son's weight.  I personally don't believe in water flavored milk so 1% is the lowest I will go.  We are making sure he gets a lot more water.

  • We were told to give DD 2%.

The doctor recommended swtiching to whatever we drink (1%), but did say we may want to start with 2% and go from there. DD has had 1% numerous times due to lack of whole milk availability and never had a problem so we went straight to 1%.

  • We are at 1% and have been there since the 18 month appointment.  Our LO was off the charts weight wise and was tracking too heavy so we had to switch to 1% and increase water intake.  He is now back on track.

Just went yesterday for her checkup and doctor said 1%.
  • I'm curious, what is the benefit of switching? My pedi didn't say anything to me about it so we still give whole milk. Should I be giving something else??

Whole milk has extra fat that they don't need after 1 (unless they are picky eaters and don't get enough fat in their diets).

I found this article that explains it a bit:

  • DS is on Rice milk now, as we found a dairy allergy around 6 months ago. Makes me feel better because no hormones anyway. And DS is finally climbing back from the 18th percentile now!
