The Starbucks test

How much weight do you put on this test? I feel like my top name choice is failing right now, but I'm not sure if I understand what the results are supposed to be.

The name I have been trying out is Magdalena. I've been using it anywhere I have to give my name at a counter. I get lots of compliments on it, but no one can spell it. I've see it written Magdalinda, Magdelenna. One person spelled it properly, but the person calling out the orders read it as Madeleine.

Would you consider this a failure and toss the name off your list?

I'm not sure how much weight to put on this test. Certainly if we use this name she could use a NN like Maggie or Alena to avoid confusion.

And to be fair I usually use my -son LN in these situations, once I was waiting and waiting at Starbucks and apparently my order had been marked for 'Susan' which I had not responded to.

Re: The Starbucks test

  • it would be a red flag for me if no one could spell the name correctly, but then again that's easily corrected with the use of a nn. i wouldn't put too much thought into it if it's a name that you're sure you love and you want to use.

  • I wouldn't consider the Starbucks test alone a failure because, frankly, some people can't spell/read even the simplest of words/names.  My real name is Ashley and all of my life I've had people glance at my name on a sheet of paper, then call me Alisha.

  • I wouldn't stress about how it is spelled at Starbucks....my own name is Meghan. Not a very uncommon name. I know most people don't have the "h" in there, but my name has never been spelled correctly on a Starbucks cup. I think it was only once spelled "Megan" and I've gotten a weird variety of other spellings including:
    Meggin
    Magen
    Megen
    Meagean
If the people at Starbucks cannot spell commonly used names, anything even slightly different doesn't stand a chance. I love your name choice, fwiw...

  • I've never heard of this test! How cool!
  • I wouldn't count a name out based solely on this method, either, though I don't think it hurts to factor it in.

I have a kind of unique first name.  Let's say for the sake of argument it's "Tori" (it's not).  My whole life I have to correct people who want to spell it "Toni" or "Torie" or whatever. Honestly, I'm used to it and it isn't a huge deal to me.  Magdalena is not necessarily my style, but it's pretty and it isn't from way out in left field.  It's a legit name.  I like it.

  • I wouldn't give too much weight to a test like that.

My name is Heather.  Super simple to say, spell and understand.  For whatever reason I constantly get called every other H name-- Holly, Helen, Heidi. It's the strangest thing.

FWIW, Magdalena is gorgeous.  And I spelled it right without having to refer to your OP.  And I am a semi terrible speller.

Also-- you are so very close to the end-- SQUEE!

  • Personally I would not put a TON of weight on this. My hubby used to work at Starbucks and he said that most the people he worked with were ding dongs. At least their hearing it right, most the time, they just cannot spell :)

I think your name is really pretty.

  • We were just making fun of this today as my buddy brought over Starbucks for us both, my name is Cara, I am use to getting Kara, w/e, today I got Caren... Who spells Karen with a C? I don't remember what my friend got but it was not even close to her name.

  • My name is Melissa. Easy enough. High on the baby names list the year I was born. Common spelling. At least 75 percent of the time it's spelled Mellissa or Mellisa on my Starbucks cup.

I wouldn't put too much stock in that test personally.

  • I'm Amanda, and more often than not it's misspelled at Starbucks. I get Ammanda, Ananda, Amenda, whatever. People are dumb and they don't care.

BTW, love your baby name whether anyone can spell it or not!

  • I wouldn't put too much stock in it.  I agree that a nickname would be an easy way around that anyway.

  • My FN is never spelled correctly, or when spelled correctly is mispronounced by those who don't know me. I could care less how my name is written on a SBUX cup, and as far as mis-pronounciation goes, it's a good way of screening telemarketer calls.

  • Meh. Plenty of people have names that are not easily spelled or not familiar to everyone. They are still awesome, legitimate names. And Magdalena is beautiful!
  • LOL, no. DD has a very Gaelic FN that no one will ever be able to spell or pronounce properly on the first try. She'll likely have to give her MN or LN as a name for Starbucks, Panera, restaurant reservations, etc. I don't care. We love the name, and so does everyone who hears it.

This . Im Megan NO ONE can ever spell it right .
  • One of my friends worked at Starbucks all through college and she said it was a pretty boring and repetitive job, so for fun, they would purposely make up the most ridiculous spellings for names and find funny ways to say normal names.  So yeah....don't throw out a name you love because people working a minimum wage job are either just having fun, don't care to get it right, or are just plain stupid and can't figure it out.
  • My name is Juliet and it totally fails the Starbucks test.  They never get it right and I've gotten some ridiculous spellings.  But I love my name.  And I think Magdalena is great too.

My name is Shannon, but I always get Janet or Sharon at Starbucks.  Seriously.
