Would you have sent your child to daycare?

Let's play "Would you have sent your kid to daycare?"!

DS woke up in a good mood yesterday and ate breakfast fine.  He was in the church nursery and they said he was very good.  On the way home from church, he was fussy and crying, then he vomited in the car.  After vomiting, he got REALLY tired and wanted to go to sleep at 11:30 (usual naptime is 12:30).  We took his fever when we got home (no fever) and then sent him straight to bed without lunch.

We woke him up at 3:15.  He would have kept sleeping for quite a while, as far as I could tell.  When we woke him, his fever was 100.2.  He wanted to eat and drink, so we gave him some pedialyte and crackers.  We also gave him ibuprofen for his fever.  After that, he acted 100% normal.  He ate dinner and went to bed around 7:15, which is his normal bedtime.  His temperature was slightly elevated (99.2).  He slept through the night, and when he woke up this morning (earlier than normal, probably because of his long nap yesterday) his temperature was 98.8.  He ate breakfast and was acting fine.  No vomiting aside from the one time in the car on Sunday morning.

My husband took him to daycare.  I would have kept him home.  Technically, he was okay to go considering his temperature never reached the ?fever? threshold (100.4 according to our pedi) and he only vomited once.  He has vomited in the car before without being sick, but only maybe 4x in his life.  It?s not a common occurrence.

I?ve got my phone on me today in case daycare calls.

What would you have done?

Our daycare requires them to be fever free without meds for 24 hours so I probably would've kept him home. Hope he feels better soon!

This...also vomit/diarrhea free for 24 hours as well. I also hope he feels better. :/

  • We go to a small licensed in-home and if it's not some horrible disease or a serious fever, DCP is generally happy to take her, so I probably would have sent her but asked to be given an update mid-day to see if she's doing better. If we were at a big center, then probably would have kept her home.

  • I would have sent him.

  • I would have sent him - that's not high enough of a fever to be considered one at my daycare.

  • I would not have sent him b/c even if he's over the worst of the bug, he's probably still very contagious and that stuff spreads like wildfire.

  • DCs here have a 24 hours no vomiting rule.  The fever threshold here is 100.3, and at 100.2 it would depend how it was taken as to whether I would factor that in; regardless of the temp,  I would have kept him home.

Yes, I would have since he was acting totally normal and eating normally and was fever free.  Sounds like he just had an upset stomach and was able to get rid of whatever was bothering him and sleep it off.

Yep, this. I have kept her home for just a runny nose/bad cough overall looking and acting miserable with no fever. So i just go with my gut. There have been 2 instances where she's puked in the evening, no fever though, and sent her the next day because she was acting normal.

  • I'm kind of upset that DH took him in. It's not the call I would have made. However, DS didn't technically meet the "sick" criteria. Daycare's fever threshold is 100.3, and they can vomit 3x before they are sent home. I even called the pediatrician, and they don't consider 100.2 a fever.

  • Honestly, it would depend on the day.  If I had something super important and work and DH couldn't take off, I would have sent him.  If missing work wasn't a big deal and I had sick time available, I would have kept him home.
  • Time off is definitely a huge problem. I only have a week left for the rest of the year. We had strep go through the house, and I was out of work for over a week.

  • In that situation, most likely sent him.

We had something similar happen recently, LO puked 1x and he was running a low-grade fever (100.5) but it was at 1:30a. Lovely child woke me up to puke on me. Since it was so middle of the night we kept him home the next day, because we weren't sure if he was ok or not by 7a.  If it had been at least 12hrs of no puke and no fever then yea, to daycare he goes.

  • Fever by my daycare rules is over 100. Has to be fever free for 24 hrs without meds. My kid would have stayed home. It's not cool to knowingly expose all the other kids.

  • I would have sent them.  We've had so many fleeting viruses like that -  1 vomit, a minor fever, then all better the next day.  Also, I know they are getting it from daycare, so the kids have already been exposed.  Plus, worst exposure risk is before symptoms start AND gastroenteritis is contagious for 2 weeks after.  I'm not keeping them home for 2 weeks, so what's the point.

  • For what it's worth, he was fine today . Normal temperature all day and he was in a good mood. I still would have kept him home, but it didn't turn out terrible. I'm glad he's feeling better.
