Re: Poll: Milk

  • We'll either be doing Organic Whole Cow's Milk or Organic Almond Milk. Probably call the pedi and get their opinion in a month or so.
  • We will do cows milk and probably some almond milk which is what I drink.

Eta: both organic. Which is what we already buy.

  • WCM. One from a local dairy that is not homogenized and very low pasteurized because raw milk is illegal to sell in Ohio. Organic is ultra pasteurized and loses a ton of nutritional value that babies need. We will also be using organic unsweetened coconut milk also.

goat then cow. we did the same for our first.

  • We'll be going with whole cow's milk.  Currently, we drink 2% so I'll start buying a gallon of whole milk for the kids (DSS is tiny so REALLY should be drinking whole milk) and a half gallon of 2% for DH and I.

Can you  explain this? Mammals after weaning age don't actually need milk - from their own or others. The reason milk is maintained in a baby's diet is for fat for brain development, not really for any other nutritional component. As the solids' diet is expanded, that's where the nutrition comes from. Milk is just supposed to be quick, easy calories.

  • WCM - We don't do organic now but we'll see if that changes.

  • Raw free range grass fed cows milk has the most nutritional value. Organic milk that is sold in my area is all ultra pasteurized which strips a lot of vitamins and such from the milk. But like I said it is illegal to sell raw milk in Ohio so I did extensive research on all of our local dairys.

Do you think that the trade off for organic (less nutrition) vs. regular (additives/hormones/etc) WCM is worth it?

I was googling after I started this thread and in VA it's illegal to sell raw milk, too. However, they get around it by selling you a share in a cow. So, the cow is YOURS and they charge you an initial fee and then $35 boarding fee. You come get your milk once/week or something.

I have no plans to get raw milk, I think there's a reason it's illegal and wouldn't give it to DS, but that's just an FYI. Maybe there's something like that around you.

Personally, I don't. Milk is infant food. So, raw cow milk is great for baby cows, but the nutritional content isn't something human adults "need (although I like my dairy products just as much as the next person). Raw milk can carry TB, among other things, which is why it's illegal to sell and why Pasteurization is so highly regarded.

So are you saying there is no nutritional value in milk beyond the calories? What about vitamins A,D,E,K and B which are all found in milk and also C? I as an adult do not drink milk for calories as I do for the nutrition. Also for calcium, magnesium and zinc.

If you do research the last outbreak of salmonella from milk in Illinois that affected nearly 15,000 people was due to a pasteurized milk brand.

Many "conventional" milk companies are hormone-free. It may or may not say on the carton itself, but check the website too. I was going to start buying a more expensive brand of milk because it was hormone-free; then I researched what I was already buying, on their website they state they don't use the hormones.

Store-brand milk is often from the same dairies that the name-brand milk is. All milk is labeled with a code of what dairy it is from, here's a website that will tell you where it's from: https://www.whereismymilkfrom.com/

Thats why I choose to do extensive research on where my milk is coming from and have visited the dairy. They do not use additives or hormones.

Not at all. Milk has a lot to offer. But, as humans, we're meant to have human milk early on and then move on to other nutritional sources. Our bodies have no actual nutritional NEED for a food designed for another mammal infant. So, I am not getting worked up about what it loses in pasteurization - we can get  everything we need from a balanced diet of other things. And, I'll take a pasteurized milk over raw milk. (for the record, I also think raw milk is pretty awesome - I am just not interested in the risks and no way would I give it to a smaller, more vulnerable child).

  • Probably a combo of cows milk or soy. DH and I prefer soy milk an any cows milk we buy usually goes bad before we finish it.
