Success after IF

PCOS and breastfeeding

Hi all

Does anyone here have PCOS? If so, did you have low supply issues when breastfeeding? A lactation consultant I met with has me starting back on metformin to hopefully help with supply. If anyone has any success stories, I'd love to hear them for some encouragement. Thanks!

Re: PCOS and breastfeeding

  • I have PCOS, now I'm not sure if my low supply was due to that or other factors like tongue tie etc. But the point is I had a low supply and we figured it out. I went on domperidone, made lactation cookies was on herbal supplements and we sorted it out. We are 100 breastfeeding now. It takes work so don't give up! I had to pump in the middle of the night for a few months to have milk to supplement her. Now she doesn't need that anymore.

This helped bring my supply back up when I stopped bf for a week because I was on meds. Plus water, relaxation and oatmeal.

    Good luck!

I have PCOS and low supply. I was told that met would help, but my OB wouldn't prescribe it. Between the met and the Dom you should be able to get your supply up. You can also try the teas, herbs, lactation cookies, oatmeal, flaxseed, brewers yeast, etc to help. And make sure you are drinking 100 oz of water a day and eating as much as you did when pg, if not more.
It took me a while to get my supply up, but at 10.5 months we are still going strong. GL!

It can. Not everyone with PCOS will have under supply, some will even have oversupply. But yes, PCOS can cause under supply.

It actually does affect it more often than not -- either by causing OVER-supply (about a third of PCOS women) or UNDER-supply (another third).  While the remaining third have a normal supply level.

  • I BF DD for 8 months no problem and so far its going well with DS. No under or over supply here but I definitely had insecurities about whether my supply was adequate or not especially during growth spurts.
