When did your child start referring by name?

My daughter is slightly delayed on language---not enough to qualify for services, and is actually made a big boost in the last few months to lessen the gap, she is right about average. She is starting to string words together, and repeats many things we say.

I do notice that she doesn't refer to herself by name yet. I was wondering if i should be concerned about it and mention it to her pedi---or if I just take a wait and see attitude.

Usually baby, sometimes "me"--depends on if it is a recent picture of her. We don't really do that too often. If we have her look into the mirror and ask her who it is--she just says "mirror.".

I definitely do think she recognizes herself--she loves looking in the mirror and smiles when she sees pictures of herself.

Because of her slight language delay I seem to pay way to much attention to any language milestone, even though she seems on target with many other milestones--I just worry a lot.

I'm going to say somewhere between 18 and 20 months. Before she referred to herself by name, she called herself "you".

LOL. Well you are pointing to a mirror. Nora is only just now answering "Nora" to the what's your name question. But she has been referring to herself in pictures as baby Nora for a long time now. I think it depends a lot on what you work on with her. How often are you using her name when talking to her? Or do you use nicknames like sweetheart a lot?

We use Reese or Reesie. She has spelled her name before---I heard her drawing and her saying "R-E-E-S-E; Reese!" And she does look at you, respond to her her name when called it.

The mirror thing cracks me up--because she is right--I am pointing to the mirror. However it did take her to about 20 months or so to say Mommy/Daddy. We were never mama/dada--she just never called us by name often. Now she calls my husband Rich instead of Dad. Ooops.

Dd will be 2 in August and she's not even close to saying her name or acknowledging who she is. She will just make faces in the mirror. We work on it everyday, though.

I had Carson's speech evaluated around 2 and they told me that he should refer to himself by his name. He didn't and I freaked. He was "borderline" for needing services. I asked his pedi and neurologist and they both said that was not correct. He knew his name for sure back then, but never referred to himself as "Carson" until maybe a couple of months ago.

If you asked "where is A..", she would point to herself and say her name. That was about 17-18 months.

By 19 months, if you asked her what her name was, she would just say her name.

DS1 is almost 2. Just in the last month or so, he's started to refer to himself as "Bobby" even though everyone calls him Robbie, I think he's just having trouble saying the R. It's adorable. He'll say "Bobby play soccer" then go kick the ball around. Before that if you asked him his name, he would confidently say, "name." I think he just didn't get the question because he's responded to his name for a long time.

Same with DS, though he's a few months younger than your DD. He still just refers to himself as "baby."
