holy socially awkward

We went to a wedding last night. DH was a groomsman, so he was at the head table, and I sat at a table with my BIL and DH's friend's wives (most of his friends were groomsman). His one friend has the strangest wife ever. Last night she reached a whole new level of weirdness.

We were talking and she says "So, you work nights, and Doug works days... I'm surprised you had time to make a 2nd baby." How does one even respond to that? Bahahaha  I just stared at her blankly.

Then a few minutes later she says "Shannon (the best man's wife) has an amazing body, do you think she does anything?" I said "Yea, she's a runner."

A few minutes later she says to Shannon "You have an amazing figure, do you do anything, like throw up your food to keep it that way." Um, what? Who asks someone that? Shannon says "No, I work my azz off at the gym."

My BIL (who hasn't spent much time with her) says wow, that girl is weird. Understatement of the year. I'm still shaking my head. There were other comments, but these were the best.

If she said that to me I'd punch her in the face. Seriously? Accusing/Joking bulimia? WTF is wrong with that person.

What I'm mostly surprised by in this post is that people still do the "head table" and make the bridal party sit separately from their SOs.

This. Usually if their is a head table for the bridal party, they account for their spouses or guests to sit with them.

Other than that, yeah, weirdo lady!

I haven't been to a wedding in a while and I didn't pay attention to the head table. I had no idea the norm was to seat spouses with the BP.

Pretty much every wedding I've been to has a "sweetheart" table with the bride and groom.  The bridal party is typically sat at a table with their SO or the bridal party is split up so they are sitting with their logical group (e.g. family, college friends, etc.) with their SOs.

I think most people don't like the "head table" because being separated from your SO at dinner at a wedding can kind of blow--especially when your SO doesn't really know anyone at the wedding.

It really has been ages since my last wedding. When did this start BTW? Every wedding I can remember when I was younger had a head table.

DH and I had a very small wedding. We didn't have a BP other than a BM, MOH, ring bearer and flower girl. They were both single and declined to bring a date so it wasn't an issue we even thought about.

  • She sounds nuts.

I've never seen a bridal party sit with their spouses, always at a head table. Interesting idea.

I got married 5 years ago and was active on a local message board...I think almost everyone was doing the "sweetheart" table.  I don't think I've ever seen the bridal party sat separately from their SOs in the past 7 years or so.

Thanks. I just had no idea. It's interesting how traditions change. I wonder what else is different that I am unaware of. If DD ever gets married, I am going to be so out of the loop when the time comes. lol

    Yeah. Talk about socially awkward.

Please tell me it wasn't raised a few feet above everyone else.

I was a BM in a friend's wedding in 2008 and they had a long head table on risers. MH had to sit elsewhere and he didn't know anyone there. The premium open bar helped us get over it though.
  • I feel bad for her.  Sounds like she tries really hard to be funny but ends up making everyone uncomfortable.
I give up trying to get a ticker.  I have a DD that is 2.5 years old and is awesome.  Maybe I'll add a quote to distinguish myself.  Hmmm.  How about...

"It is more fun to talk with someone who doesn't use long, difficult words but rather short, easy words like "What about lunch?" - A.A. Milne, Winnie-the-Pooh
  • I mostly feel sorry for people like that because I can be socially awkward in uncomfortable situations.   No, I wouldn't ever say the things she said because I wouldn't think them in the first place,   but I do say not-that-funny jokes or accidently say something odd. Never rude, I just don't word things properly when I'm nervous.

Basically,  I freak out and blurt out random things....so I'm the female Chandler Bing.

I feel like the head table died out 10 years ago...at least at the East Coast weddings I've attended...

hmmm. Well maybe it's regional? I'm in western Canada and haven't seen it [yet, maybe it's coming?]
