My cousins are throwing me a baby shower and they asked questions on a couple things. We are doing a diaper raffle and for a gift I thought movie tickets would be great. The theme of my baby shower is "a star is born". so I figure 2 movie tickets would work together but I mentioned it to a friend and she said its a lousy gift for a diaper raffle.
I was thinking to spice it up I can just add me and my bf favorite movie with a bag of popcorn and candy inside a little popcorn tin from targets 1$ section.
what do you think of the gift idea
Re: diaper raffle gift??
I think so too Michelle but I appreciate your response. I'm curious what does everyone have against diaper raffles?
I'm already spending money on a gift for you, I shouldn't be told I have to spend more money and buy diapers too.

Please don't do any of this.
Thank you.
Yeah, but they will feel obligated. Who wants to be the jerk that shows up and doesn't participate in the diaper raffle? You're dictating what they buy and in the process guilting them - not necessarily on purpose but trust me you are. Really, don't do it.
I don't need to be told what my gift giving options are. And really, you are giving me the option of buying you more stuff? How kind of you.

Raffles are done as fundraisers for charities. Are you a charity?
Raffles are tacky. End of story. You can cutesy it up, give out neat gifts, but in the end, all you're trying to do is milk people for more stuff. How sweet.
I agree that diaper raffles are tacky and should not be done.
But if you're going to do one anyway I think your prize ideas kind of suck. A box of diapers costs $45. Your prize is some candy and dollar section junk that will ultimately get thrown away. Even the 'winner' ends up losing. The prize should be equivalent to what you're expecting guests to contribute. How about a $50 gift card to a really nice restaurant or spa? Or if you want to stick with the movie theme a $50 gift card to the movies so they can go a couple times and also afford concessions?
What about people who only gave diapers as a gift? This would kind of invalidate their gift because it would be seen as the "optional" thing, and therefore be interpreted that they didn't get a "real" gift, just something to win a prize.
If you want to give a prize, have a few party games. If you want to get diapers, register for them. Something like this just has too many ways to make guests feel obligated an uncomfortable and it comes across as greedy, because you're asking for more stuff.
Excellent point. What about those people who can only afford to give diapers as a gift ? How would that make them feel ?
OP, I don't know you very well but you seem like a nice girl who would never intend to make an honored guest feel bad. Unfortunately, that very well might happen if you do a diaper raffle and might put you in a negative light. Please rethink this.

What kind of diapers are you buying? Are they diamond encrusted?
In my opinion, I think diaper raffles are a good idea and NOT tacky because to me it is an option. Guest brings just gift - awesome. Guest brings just pack of diapers - still awesome. Guest brings both - bonus awesome. But it's not like hey you MUST bring both a gift and diapers....On my invites I will make sure that my host makes that pretty clear that it isn't like it's mandatory or anything.
Anyway, to answer your question, I would be totally happy with two movie passes....maybe throw in a little gift card for the theatre in addition so some snacks can be bought or something?
Lol this made me laugh...I have also never seen such an expensive pack of diapers lol.
She didn't ask if it was popular, or if the diaper raffle itself was a good idea....she asked what we thought of the prize.
Wow so many responses ladies but the topic was diaper raffle gift? Not what do you think of having diaper raffle. I already know majority of the women here don't believe in diaper raffles, Skype baby showers and something about books that I keep reading about but I was basically wondering if the gift was a good idea or not. Some did answer my question so thanks. To the rest of the mommy's I guess we agree to disagree. Where I come from no one ever feels obligated to do anything or would feel bad for not bringing diapers. Its a intimate baby shower with close family and friends like I stated so people would want to. Then yet I do hear what you all are saying but no I am not a charity case to the mommy who asked me if I was, Neither is my baby so thanks.(rude) The diapers of the registry is a great idea. To the people who only gave diapers I think they would feel ok because they gave something. My people are from los Angeles and Compton none of these folks would feel compelled, obligated, or forced to bring something extra. Knowing them they'd all want to help. Again agree to disagree but thanks though I got my response.
Awesome for you; not awesome for the guest who is made to feel as though their gift if diapers is "just" anything. Not awesome for the guest who is worried about being side-eyed for not bringing a pack of diapers. Yes, it does happen. Not awesome for the MTB who sees only 2 people brought the "optional" pack of diapers and realizes the ploy to get more stuff backfired and then wonders if people were judging her greediness.
See all the faux pas there? So many ways for guests to be made uncomfortable.
Is it worth sacrificing your dignity to get cheap diapers that don't work well?

This.
If I were invited to a shower with a diaper raffle, I would just subtract the cost of the cheapest pack of diapers from the amount that I would normally spend on a gift. I would guess that that is what most people do. So a diaper raffle is really a lose lose for the MTB. You're trading thoughtful, or useful gifts for a pack of crappy diapers. Good idea? I think not.
