I have been meaning to post this into for so long but just did not find the time until now.
A few of you I recognize and you will recognize me too, but after a long battle with IF, failed IVF's, moving on to life as CFNBC and then the biggest and best surprise of our lives, little Andrew came into this world 3 weeks ago today weighing in at 5lb 10oz at 38w.
Labor was odd for me, I thought I was in labor, as did the Dr's but seems I was having some unrelated pain at the same time. I was effectively induced to try to get my contractions really going yet my real medical condition was masking labor. Long story short, after 12 hours of pain, I got an epi, slept for 4 hours and woke to the need to push. A few pushes later, without any tearing or interventions, Andrew was born healthy and feisty. He is doing really well and gaining weight well.
Now the other story. The pain I was having was not labor related, but something totally unrelated and something that became a bigger issue than I could have ever expected.
Once I had Andrew, I was not pooping or even eating. I was throwing up all the way through labor and the days afterwards yet the hospital did not seem to think there was any issue. I was discharged on a Sat and by the Monday I was back to the ER as the pain was awful and I was constantly throwing up, throwing up a lot of liquid and bile. ER just gave me some high end pain meds and a liter of fluids and sent me home. They did not look into my issues or try to find out the cause.
On the Tuesday I called my OB (who was out ill herself from the day after I delivered) and she told me to see my regular Dr that day. I went to see my Dr and within minutes of seeing me, my distended belly (bigger than when I was pregnant) and in so much pain he admitted me immediately. 2 days of tests in another hospital, all X-rays, MRI and CAT scans were inconclusive, Dr and surgeon decided to do exploratory surgery. I was very upset, it was the last thing I wanted and leaving my new son for surgery was really tough. In surgery they found I had a complete blockage of my lower intestine, so bad that necrosis had set in and I had to have a part of my lower intestine removed.
I recovered in hospital for another 4 days, finally getting some nutrients after not eating for over 12 days and it took a ling time for my body to restart things again. I had to have an NG tube twice to keep my stomach pumped, a foley catheter twice also as my kidneys/bladder shut down and only took nutrients in via IV's for the next 2 days and then only on a liquid diet for the next 3 days. All in all I lost 23lbs in 12 days, my weight is lower now than pre-pregnancy.
The only way I could be discharged was to get home help so I had a baby nurse come in for the first 4 days when I was home and the MIL come around each later afternoon to help. Having the baby nurse was brilliant and she helped me get my breastmilk supply back and showed me how to bath Andrew, and lots of tricks and traps for being a FTM.
I have recovered really well, the whole birth story feels like it was a million years ago and now finally back on my feet. My Mom was on holidays in the UK over all this time and is getting back today. She does not know anything about all of this drama and I know I will get chewed out by her once she learns the story but there was nothing that she could have done to help and I did not want her cancelling her tour and coming to help out.
This LO was not meant to be, we had given up all hope of ever having kids due to IF. We were always "one and done" as he was a true miracle for us, but after this ordeal we are definitely "one and done" as the Dr's cannot guarantee that pregnancy did or did not cause this issue so there is a chance it could happen again. All I know is that scar tissue from a prior lap for an ectopic attached itself to my intestine so this could reappear at some later stage in life but at least I know what to look out for.
Here is a snap of my little boy.
Multiple ectopics, 2 failed IVF's
IVF #1: Did not get to ET, embies all failed PGD (major chromosomal defects)
IVF #2: We have 2 chromosomally perfect embies as a result of PGD (Boy/Girl) 1 failed the thaw (Girl) Transferred 1, yet ended as a c/p
