Give it to me straight

How bad was getting rid of the swaddle cold turkey? LO started rolling and I need to ditch the swaddle. I am WAY nervous to break this wondrous streak of wonderful sleep!

  • It wasn't that bad for us.  The first 2 or 3 nights, she woke up a few more times and I just had to give her back her pacifier and she fell right back to sleep.  Now, she sleeps all night fine.

After unswaddling, does your LO sleep on their tummy if you lay them down on her back, does she roll over in the middle of the night and go to sleep?

  • :( Not looking forward to this one bit, either. We still don't have rollers (DD2 is eons away from rolling, DD1 has been thisclose for weeks and weeks and weeks)....but it's gonna happen. I think we just like to think it won't. There's a reason Halo's Medium size sleep sacks don't come with wings ::cries::

We like the 3-4 hour stretches we get now, dangit!

  • We're on night 4.  When she was swaddled, she was waking up at night every couple hours sometimes, and all she usually needed was the paci.  So I knew this was a soothing issue.

I took it away and put her in a sleep sack.  Initially, it is taking her over an hour to fall asleep. I let her fuss a bit and put the paci in repeatedly, and rub her back. But I usually end up rocking her to sleep eventually.  But then she seems to sleep all night without a peep.  Now, I'm not sure she's sleeping as soundly as before because when I check on her she's sometimes thrashing around with her eyes closed, but she is not waking me up, if that makes sense.  Last night she slept from 9-6 when I had to wake her! So I consider this a win for us right now.

DD doesn't sleep on her stomach.  She will sometimes roll over before she falls asleep, but hardly ever in the middle of the night.  I leave her until she cries then I put her back on her back and give her the pacifier again.  Once they can roll there isn't really anything you can do about them rolling over.  They should be fine if they want to sleep on their stomachs.

Interested to see responses...so far our attempts have had awful results Sad.  Any advice from those who made it through successfully?  Anyone have any advice how I can help my LO stop punching herself in the face in the MOTN and waking herself up?  Or is it one of those things you just have to struggle through until it gets better suddenly?

We still have this problem. She flips her arms all over the place and flicks her paci out of her mouth that first hour or so while she is trying to fall asleep.  But once she is asleep, she's fine.  I think this will get better as they get older and get better hand eye coordination.

  • No big deal here but my LO was never that big a fan of the swaddle- he always wanted his arms free.  We just switched to a sleep sack without the swaddle feature though.  I put him down on his back and so far he hasn't rolled in his sleep, though I am still nervous that he will.  Supposedly once they are able to do it, it's okay for them to be on their tummies, but I will probably roll him back if I see him on his tummy at least until he gets closer to a year old.

  • We moved dd from the miracle blanket to her sleep sack and she stared sleeping even better than before!  She always slept about 7-8 hours and then she started sleeping 10-12in her sleep sack. I couldn't believe it!

  • We swaddlesd Christopher with one arm out, the left arm to be exact, for one week. He did perfectly fine! The night after we removed the swaddle completely he slept 9 hours...8pm-5am. HOWEVER...he was sleeping in the Rock N' Play!! That will be the next transition..YIKES!!

  • My son started rolling an I just left one arm out until he started getting really antsy for complete freedom. Then he was fine.

This gives me hope! Our DD sleeps 8 hours in her miracle blanket, I have. Sleep sack shipping to me as we speak and have been nervous to make the transition, hope it goes well!

  • We didn't have a problem. DD slept better not swaddled. She was waking herself up trying to stretch. She hasn't been swaddled since about 3 weeks old.

  • We just did it last week. We swaddled 1 arm out one night and she slept normal so the next night we did both and she still slept normal and we haven't swaddled since.

  • We didnt have too much trouble but DD had been breaking out for a couple weeks before I stopped so she had spent some time unswaddled
  • Try the magic sleep suit if cold turkey doesn't quite work.

  • We started unswaddling at 2 months by alternating one arm out one night the next arm out the other night and yes at first she would swat her paci out and we would put it back in. That went on about a week then we just went cold turkey and she has slept through the night since 3 months with no MOTNF. Our Dd apparently loves to sleep but we still cosleep. Gl

  • It took DS about a week to get used to going to sleep without it.  That was a rough week since he kept waking up every 1-1.5 hr.  But he is fine without it now and is sleeping for longer stretches than he did with the swaddle.  Some babies seem to have an easier transition.

  • I'm with HALO and I'm also a mom and a HALO SleepSack wearable blanket user.  With DS2, we got rid of the swaddle cold turkey for naps at about 4 months old.  Then about a week or so later, we weaned gradually for night time.  I think he did fine with cold turkey at naps, but because I was much more worried about him adjusting to nighttime without, we did one arm out, then both arms out, then a Halo SleepSack wearable blanket.  I was really nervous too, but he surprised me with how easy the transition was and it hardly affected his sleep - I think he was definitely ready.  Plus, I think transitioning to the SleepSack really helped because it replaced the swaddle part of his nighttime routine and still provided some snugness and confinement.  I hope this help.

  • We stopped two nights ago. She is waking up often because her paci is falling out, but she is doing surprisingly well. She goes down without any issues.

  • It was no big deal for us. We did transition to the crib at the same time. DD also became a belly sleeper with these changes.

  • It was hell until we got the Baby Merlin's Magic Sleep Suit.  Now he is sleeping in his crib instead of the RnP and isn't swaddled.
He has never been a phenomenal sleeper but he is waking twice at night now instead of every 40 minutes.
