Cloth Diapering

What am I doing wrong? (Leak question)

So, I have been mostly using prefolds and covers and we have finally gotten the hang of those, but I got some AIOs and pockets b/c my DH wants something that is easier/less steps.  But no matter what, the AIOs and pockets leak.  They look snug around the leg and waist, so I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong?  I prepped them according to the directions - should I wash a few more times?  Is there some trick I don't know about?

I have tried BGs, Kawaiis, a Thirsties AIO...all three have leaked on us.  Any advice would be great - I really want to figure these out/get them to work!

  • OS or newborn sized?

Your baby is still young, so maybe doesn't fit we'll in the OS yet,or if they are newborn has probably outgrown absorbency.

How long do you leave them on and are they soaked when you have leaks?

I would say this. DD was peeing through her NB BG's really young. Luckily she fits in the OS because of her chunky thighs =]

I posted about this a few weeks ago. I use BG 4.0 pockets at night (the AIO's weren't cutting it) and have been using two of the inserts with the snaps on them. I'm new at this, not sure the term for these types of inserts. We have had great success with the double stuffing!

  • How big is your little one? DD was born at 9.5 lbs. We used infant prefolds and flip covers from 2 weeks on with no problems. However, we got tons of leaks in our BG 4.0s until she was about the age of your LO. They were gone completely by 2 months. Your LO probably just needs to grow a bit more before fitting into AIOs and pockets.
    Mommy to N (3), J (2), and C (10 months). LO4 is due in mid-September.

I, too, think one of these is likely the culprit. The diapers you listed don't need multiple washes to be "prepped" since they're synthetic fibres as opposed to natural fibres.

  • Also, make sure you're tucking any fleece or suede cloth in around the legs. My diapers wicked onto onesies and pants really bad at first. Once I started tucking, it stopped.

Thanks guys, yes they are one sized so that might very well be it.  How do I tuck in the fleece?  It seems like the way they are sewn there is always a thin edge of fleeciness showing - do I turn that whole seam inside?
