So, I live in Oklahoma where a tornado is a common occurrence. Although I have lived here about 9 years, I have never had one close by. I have never had to take shelter or worry about a tornado hitting our house. I have been pretty fortunate. Last night though, a torndado touched down just a few streets over from us. We went on our back porch and could see it in our neighborhood! We got the dogs and went to the spare bathroom to ride out the storm (our "safe place" in case of storms). I was pretty freaked out.
Luckily our house didn't suffer any damage, and it turned out to only be an EF 1 or 2. But, it was definintely too close for comfort.
I guess I can now say I am officially an Oklahoman as I have had my first real tornado experience.
Anyways, hope you all have a fabulous Friday!

Re: N3TR: Too close for comfort
Thanks ladies.
I would have been in the bathroom long before that but my husband was born and raised here. He says there is no need to take cover until you can see the funnel cloud. Drives me crazy.

Glad you're O-Kay in OK. My uncle posted last night saying four miles from him was too close for comfort. (He lives in Broken Arrow right next to Tulsa) and my dad (Just north in Owasso) posted some pics today from his local stations of the storms. Too scary!
I hope your safe room is centrally located. You know you should get in the closet or bathroom because you want a small room centrally located if you don't have a basement? I'm surprised in nine years this is the first time you had to take shelter, even here in Illinois, I've taken shelter twice in the last five years, and we don't have half the storms you guys do. Stay safe!

Thanks! Glad your family here is safe! we use the spare bathroom because it is right in the middle of the house. No windows or outside walls. We have had a couple of small tornados pass by this area since I have lived here but nothing that has been close enough that we have felt the need to take shelter. The closest one before this one was about 4-5 miles away.

Scary! I'm glad everything is OK!
I went to grad school in Kansas City MO. One of the times that I flew out there, our flight was rerouted to St. Louis due to storms. Since I had to get to school for the next day, I rented a car and started driving through thunderstorms and crazy wind. I was about 30 minutes outside of KC when I saw a funnel cloud. Holy crap, I pretty much peed my pants in the rental car. All of the other cars were pulled over on the side of the highway and I followed suit. Thank God it the funnel cloud seemed to break up to the west of where I was driving. That is 10 times closer than I ever wanted to come to a tornado!
I'm saying prayers for everyone in the mid west!
