XP: Scary A/S today... can anyone shed light?

Hi ladies, I haven't posted in a while but I used to post a bunch. I mostly lurk now. However, I had a scary day today that shook me up and am wondering if anyone else is in or has been in this situation.

Today was my a/s. It started off well & it was quite special actually because in addition to my DH, the tech also let my parents & child in as well. My parents had never seen an ultrasound, not even when my mom was pregnant with me, so they were thrilled. So the u/s takes about an hour, lots of measurements of course, and lots of seeing little gummy bear wiggling around. We were so excited to hear that the tech was (mostly, about 75%) sure it was a girl!

After the u/s, DH had to return to work for a meeting and my parents took my DD to the waiting room so I could have the rest of my appointment (bp, weight, etc.) and so the dr. could visit with me. Well, she told me that from the photos, it looks like there is a VSD... a ventricular septal defect... a heart defect. I could feel my insides crumple to the floor as she explained to me that it's probably among the most common, and among the least worrisome, of heart issues, but still worrisime all the same. Concerning enough that she wants me to see a pediatric cardiologist for more in-depth ultrasounds. I was in the room all alone with the exception of the dr. and it was so scary. Thank goodness my parents were in the waiting room! Poor DH left not expecting this news and expecting the rest of my appointment was going to be just the boring stuff, because the tech gave no hint if anything was wrong. (Although I understand it is not their place to say anything because the dr. has to examine the pics)

In addition, I learned that my placenta was low & in the front, near the cervix, and if it does not migrate up as my uterus expands, I could be looking at a C-section. Needless to say, I was (and still am) shaken up. I did a little reading up on VSD when I got home and have calmed myself down a little, but until I hear anything from the mouth of the specialist, I am terrified. Thank you if you've read this far... I really have no one to talk to who can relate so I thought some of you mamas might be able too.

My daughter has a VSD. She's monitored yearly by a cardiologist (she's 4)  but it doesn't seem to be causing any issues. A huge number of babies are born with murmurs that go away on their own.
"Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies. God damn it, you've got to be kind." - Kurt Vonnegut

Thank you for responding.  I still have so much more to learn about this, but it's helping me to know that it is relatively common

  • They thought DS had a VSD, but, when we saw the specialist with the higher level ultrasound, the specialist could not see it, so I hope that is the case for you too. T&Ps!

My DD has one as well. Same thing as PP, she's monitored annually and no issues.

It's scary to hear that anything is wrong with your child. We found out on the day we were supposed to leave the hospital when DD was born. I was terrified. I've since learned that VSDs are super common and people live long healthy lives with no complications all of the time with them. Our dr feels that DDs will eventually close on its own but he's no concerned if it doesn't.

  • I don't have any advice for the heart defect, but my thoughts are with you.

As for placenta previa, my SIL had almost a full previa and they thought for sure she would need a c section.  It ended up correcting itself and she had no issues at delivery and didn't need a section.  GL!

  • My doc told me yesterday that I have minor previa. He told me not to worry about it, that it usually corrects itself and they will check again at 28 weeks. It sounds just like yours, where the placenta is very close to if not touching the cervix.

When I went in for my A/S, they told us the same thing. They said it looked like there were two small VSDs and that I should see a pediatric cardiologist. I went in to the appointment with a list of questions and a ton of worry, and everything turned out to be just fine. The cardiologist told us that she didn't see anything concerning at all. Hopefully your outcome will be the same. If not though, my doctor assured me that a VSD is not life threatening and is very curable.

  • I am sorry you are having to go through this. It doesn't matter how common or life threating something like that is it is still scary! Sending many T&Ps your way and hoping your LO will have a normal and healthy life.

How far along were you when they did the scan? This happened to me but it was because they did the scan at 18 weeks and they said sometimes things haven't fully developed yet. I went back at 22 weeks and everything was fine.

20 weeks for my a/s.  Next week is the follow-up u/s and I'll be 21 weeks.
