hospital attire?

Is anyone else planning to wear their own clothes during delivery or buy their own gown? Not sure if I care enough, and wondering if I have anything suitable in my own closet. I'll probably just end up wearing the hospital gown, but then wearing my own stuff might add comfort in familiarity. What are you guys wearing?

My SIL had her own monogrammed pillowcase and hospital gown and matching sheet! A bit over the top, but that's just my opinion.  I've never seen a woman have so much monogrammed crap. Everything, down to the car seat cover, has her DD's name on it.  In case her newborn or anyone else forgets her name? Not to mention, she won't be able to use any of it for her second child.  She even had a pro photographer present the ENTIRE day during L & D. The pics were great, but c'mon...perhaps I'm jealous because I don't have the money or the desire to invest in things like that. My focus will be on my LO and my DH, breastfeeding, recovery, and relishing the experience of starting our family, not prepping for the camera and worrying about outward appearances.

  • I'll be wearing the hospital gown...chances are it'll be gross afterward.  I figure I'll let the hospital do the laundry.

  • To me, it's not worth the money for something I would only wear once. I would much rather spend my money on a great pair of yoga pants to wear home or after I delivered.
  • I'm planning on wearing the below. That way if I have enough energy I can go clubbing after the birth.?I Dream of Cosmos? Delivery Gown

  • I wore the hospital gown when we had DD, and will do the same this time.   I slept in it that night too (she was born at 5:49pm).

The next day, after I showered, I changed into maternity yoga pants, a loose shirt and a robe that I brought from home.

Ha, your SIL is funny. Whatever floats your boat, I suppose. We had nothing monogrammed for C and will have nothing for this one, either. We don't pick names until we meet kiddo.

As far as the clothes thing, no. I don't want to spend money on something I may possibly bleed all over. I will use the hospital gowns and will bring my own light robe to throw over it for walking. And a bathing suit top for the tub.

    ETA; Coco, you kill me.

  • Labor and birth are really... messy. I wear the hospital gown and change into my own clothes after I deliver. I would never wear something that I wanted to take home with me. It would be like volunteering to clean up a crime scene.

  • during labor and delivery, i will just wear the hospital gown so as not to mess up any of my clothes.  but I did buy a bright colored cheap jersey pillow case from target because my hospital told me that if I am bringing my own pillow (I am picky about pillows), then I need to use a bright pillow case so that the hospital knows that it's not their pillow.  and I didn't want to risk ruining my nice pillow case from home.

  • I plan on wearing the hospital gown. I packed a crappy t-shirt and pants just in case I feel like changing after delivery, but doubt I will. I don't want to ruin my clothes, and worrying about that would probably negate any positive effect of feeling comfortable in my clothes. One of my friends said she asked for a second gown to wear backwards and cover the open back while she was walking around, I thought that sounded like a great idea.

  • Wow about your SIL... that is WAY overkill and total side eye from me lol

I'll wear the hospital gown, labor is gross... sweaty and gross, especially once your water breaks and delivery is a whole separate ball game. I will have a sports bra underneath though, I feel more comfortable having a bra on under the gown and in the tub. After I deliver and shower I'll change into my own clothes, yoga pants and a nursing tank.

This makes me LOL because after delivering my son last weekend, I realize how not important all this stuff is. I packed a bag full of clothes and only changed out of the hospital gown once. I didn't even want to wash my face or brush my teeth. Everyone talks about packing yoga pants, and I did too, but you're going to be bleeding and changing your pad so often that a maxi dress or something loose is really more practical.

    Listen to Meghan.

I was in the hospital for four days last time and was in the gown for the first two. And I certainly did bleed all over everything. I was also soooo effing hot, putting on pants was out of the question. I put on shorts and a tank on day three for visitors and wore my yoga pants home.

  • I wore a hospital gown during actual labor and for the first day or so after DD was born (I had a c/s), then wore my own pajamas the rest of the time. Didn't wear real clothes until the day I went home, and that was yoga pants and a long sleeve t-shirt. :)

ETA: I forgot--I did buy these nursing PJ's, which I'm wearing now, and can also wear after. Very comfy.

  • I just wore the gown until I was discharged about 48 hours after my c-section. DS wasn't discharged for another week and I stayed with him at the hospital, and that was when I switched to yoga pants, etc. I needed some normalcy by that point. But if it's just 24-48 hours, stick with the gown. You can always take a robe to put over it when you have visitors.

I'll hold off on the curling iron, silk robe,  and fake lashes. this time.

  • I am planning a waterbirth.  So I will likely just be in a sports bra towards the end.  I am thinking about bringing a black nursing nightgown for the beginning of labor, so if it gets stained, you won't see it.

I'm going to wear the hospital gown. I packed a comfy cheap robe in case I get chilly.

But we also live 2 minutes from the hospital so if I want other clothes I can send DH home to get them.

Great point MeghanKG! Something extremely loose is coming with me =D

To answer the original question: The amount of money I'd be willing to spend on a robe/gown just to leave the rob/gown there to be burned would be a total of...$5 max. The hospital gown will probably be more comfy.

  • Hospital gown. I did buy a few nice nursing gowns and a robe to wear in the hospital and at home post birth that I will be packing.

This part of your post struck me---she is probably just as focused on her new baby, DH, breastfeeding, recovery, etc, but she also had the means to do all of the "extra" stuff that a lot of people wish they could do but don't or can't afford to, like you said (or don't want to).

Anyway, I won't judge someone for how they want to celebrate or capture their birthing experience. Some women want to go "all out" and others wear the regular hospital gown and don't do any of the extras---and no matter how you slice it, every one of those moms no matter what she chooses I'm sure is focused on her new bundle of joy. Doesn't make you more or less of a new mom.

See, I liked having my yoga pants to hold that huge pad in place. I had more leaks with #1 when I just had the hospital gown than I did with #2 yoga pants.

  • My doula and I went through some of my clothes and found something great for labor - an old jersey knit halter short sundress that is way too big for me now. Much more comfortable than a hospital gown, and I won't care if it gets destroyed. I also have an old swimsuit cover-up the thing that I can wear. Having been in a hospital gown before, I just don't find them comfortable. For the time following birth, I've got comfortable PJs and for discharge I have loose fitting yoga pants, a nursing tank, and a lightweight zip up hoodie.

This is seriously the best advice.  After DD was born, I never got dressed (out of my hospital gown) until I went home.  I requested a new clean gown when I took a shower the next day.  Pants are way too much work and I wasn't very mobile after her birth.

  • I would love to have a birth photographer. Lol that having a birth photographer means you're "prepping for the camera". All the birth photography I've seen is raw, emotional and natural. Most of the time you forget someone is there.

Yeah that! I would go beserk!! I honestly hate visitors besides my parents. Heck, I don't even allow my in-laws to be in the waiting room! I'm a weirdo of a different nature! LOL!

  • I'm wearing my own bra and the hospital gown.  Last time around I wore the hospital attire the whole time I was there.  Afterwards, I was so uncomfortable last time, I did not want to put on my own clothes.

I am super late to this party (bored at work, yay), but this is seriously so true.  I didn't change out of my hospital gown until the day after I had DD and I had a chance to shower.  Afterwards I threw on some comfy nursing pjs and went home in a maxi dress, which was the best decision I ever made.
