The other night at bedtime I was tucking J in and he said "stay here mommy, dinosaurs are going to get me"
What!? I said no, baby, there are no dinosaurs and they can't get you. He told me that they were under the bed. I had to do a full room dinosaur sweep before he would lay down.
It made me sad that he's starting to get scared of things like that Are your toddlers afraid of things? Monsters? Where do they get this?!
Re: toddler fears
Mine is terrified of thunder...which is awesome since we live in OK during tornado season and it's going to rain for the next month! His newest sentence (just starting to talk) is, "Mama, I scared!"
FWIW, I was so afraid of bugs as a child after finding one on my pillow that I made my mom do a clean sweep of my bed every single night under my supervision. You doing the dinosaur check reminded me of that!
My kids are TERRIFIED of bees- so much so that any flying bug is a bee. Cue meltdown when they see one. I know where this came from- my DH had a "talk" about stinging bugs- so yeah they now are afraid. I know my DH was trying to help- I am allergic to them- and my brother is very allergic- so trying to be preventative I guess.
They also are afraid of the dark- I have no idea where that came from.
Also, have you seen the "Monster Spray" idea? You put some essential oil that you like the smell of and some water in a spray bottle and lightly spritz down the room every night. Tell your kid it is monster repellent.
LOL! J loves bugs, like brings them to me. Here mommy, I found a worm. Umm, thanks? I am terrified for the day he brings me a snake.
I like the idea of a spray - my mom suggested a flash light too (he does have a night light)
J tells me "that's scary!" if he sees something surprising.
We rarely get thunder here so we'll see how that goes. I bet at least one of the kids freaks out.
He has also started saying, "Mommy, mine scared!" But it is usually just before we are supposed to meet friends for a play date. He looooves to see dogs, but is scared of them getting close to him. One time after reading the three little pigs he told me he was scared of the wolf outside! I had to show him there was no wolf.
I think he may now be scared of the leaf blower and sucker. Last weekend dh was using it to suck up the little lean droppings and A wanted to help and wear the bag. Well when dh turned it on I guess A didn't realize and dh didn't warn him it was going to puff up. Freaked him the F out....I was inside I thought he had sucked up a body part he was screaming so loud.
LOL babycakes! That image is so cute.
I don't think DS is scared of anything right now that causes him to freak out.
We played up loud noises as being exciting rather than scary from very early on -like thunder & a neighbor's motorcycle for example, so that's helped for loud noises, at least.
He will tell me random things are scary, like an ant, Batman, a shadow...but he says it very matter-of-factly.
When he hears thunder, he runs to open the door and says "where's the under? I can't see it! Oh! There it is" lol!
DD has been having a range of nightmares lately. The main themes have been bugs (specifically bedbugs, thanks Caillou for that.) She also is freaked out by ants. if one gets on her it's a tragedy. Of course she loves to pick flowers covered in ants.
For months she has been "not afraid of the Big Bad Wolf," but apparently that was a front, because now he's coming to get her. I spend sooo much time explaining that there is no wolf and we live in a brick house anyway.
