Help!!! Swaddling frustration

The last couple nights we have tried putting our 2.5 month old to sleep without putting him in a swaddler, he falls asleep in my arms but as soon as I put him down he starts waving his arms and legs and wakes himself up.. We have been using a sleep sack thinking that it would be a smoother transition.. He wakes up every hour kicking his legs and waving his arms and doesn't go back to sleep.. Finally at 2:30 this morning I put him back in a swaddler and he fell asleep and slept till 6:00am.. Anyone have any tips on how to get my little guy to sleep without being in a swaddler? It's so frustrating since he breaks his arms out of his swaddler now anyways!!

Re: Help!!! Swaddling frustration

  • What is the reason for wanting to stop swaddling him?  If it works, keep doing it!  LOL!

I would keep doing it as well. We are until DS can roll both ways. He's breaking at least one arm free most nights, but he still likes the tightness and it keeps his legs somewhat still.

  • Unless your DS can roll from back to front, then I don't see a reason to stop swaddling if it helps him sleep. Yes,  you will have to break the swaddle eventually but when they get a little older, they don't have the startle reflex to wake them as often.
  • We kept DS in a swaddle until 5 months. No reason to stop now.
  • I was told arms should be out

Also told arms should be out to prevent possible suffocation.

We do a Miracle Blanket at night because it is impossible to bust out of as far as I can tell. At 2.5 months he still has the moro reflex and will certainly flail around. At least another month of that.

This is what we will use to transition at 4-5 months: https://zipadeezip.com/

  • Just like with my first 2 boys, we've been putting DS3 to sleep in Halo SleepSack Swaddles for the nights (and naps too, but at less than 2 weeks old, sometimes he falls asleep before I get him wrapped up).  The reasons to stop swaddling are when LO shows signs of breaking loose or rolling over.  But you could try a different swaddler, like the Halo ones.  If you are ready to transition to no more swaddling, I found weaning gradually to work the best, doing one arm out, then both, then a Halo sleepsack wearable blanket.  GL
