Hot nights and sleepwear...

I live in Michigan and it is currently 77 degrees outside and 75 in the house. I am still learning how to dress my 7 wk old for the weather. I am always hot and my dh is usually cooler so I never know what way to go.

What do some of you recommend I have my Lo sleep in? Right now he is rocking long sleeved footie pjs with no blanket.

We don't have any sleep sacks, but if I got some would he wear a short sleeve onesie under it?

I don't want to overheat him, especially because of the SIDS risk, but he's so easy going he doesn't really fuss when he's hot.

  • I thought it was one layer more than you.

  • Well, we are in the deep south here...the high today was 85 and the low tonight is like 68. We rock the AC during the day and keep it about 72ish in the housep It will get down to about 68 or 69 in the house tonight...our ceiling fans will run.

LO sleeps in an plain onsie and then in a SwaddleMe blanket. He stays warm to the touch because he is swaddled. Also, he is going to be like my older son; hot natured! My older son sleeps in underwear year round! He is warm tothe touch in the wintertime with no blanket! LO is the same. I have to watch his hands because he sucks his knuckles for comfort and slobbery hands can get cool.

I think a footed sleeper would be fine for your temp. If it were 75 in my house we would all be hot! But we do have humidity to deal with which warms things up!

Wow....it's down to 61 right now in SW Michigan. I have DD in a long sleeve onesie and a summer swaddle tonight. We have the windows open and it is supposed to get down to 50. Last night was warmer so she was swaddled over just a short sleeve shirt. As soon as she gets thru her fussy period the swaddles are coming off so she will be in short sleeves or just a diaper. We don't have AC.

I'm in Texas and the AC and fans have been running pretty much daily since DS came home, heat a few times. We've always kept him in a diaper then swaddle him. He's never gotten too hot or cold and at night out house gets to 69 or 70 plus the fan.

  • I guess it is 67 out now, I'm in south east MI. we have the Windows open. He just woke up to eat and he went right back to sleep so I'm guessing he's a decent temp.

I'm in so cal and a couple days ago it was 100 degrees, ugh!! We run the AC to 72 and have fans in every room. DS sleeps in a short slevee onesie with a swaddle. We are weaning from the swaddle so he sleeps with one arm out right now. Not sure what we will put him in once he's weaned from the swaddle. Maybe a short sleeve sleep sack??

    Mississippi here..

The high was in the mid 80s today I think and we keep the AC on about 72, it usualu gets about 69 or 70 during the night. My husband is a very hot natured person and I'm the opposite so I feel like I'm usually freezing inside.

DS2 sleeps in a light cotton footed sleeper and [gasp] we use a light weight blanket also.

  • We do a Tshirt style onsie with Swaddle blanket and ceiling fan running and AC to keep her room cool

I was told to dress LO the same as we are dressed. Though I do keep a light flannel receiving blanket handy to lay over LO when his arms or legs feel coolto touch or the AC is blowing cold air near him.

For sleeping he likes a onesie and his small quilt now that its warm. He has slept under the quilt every night we have been home since a heavy layer under a sleep sack alone didnt keep his temp from dropping into near hypothermia during March and April.

For the past week or so we've been putting him in a short sleeved onesie underneath his SwaddleMe swaddle. He hasn't felt cold or hot. For the 2ish months before this, we've had him in some sort of feet pj underneath the swaddle (sometimes fleece, sometimes normal fabric). However, the past 3 nights have been really cold so I've been putting a fleece sleep sack over the swaddle. He seems to be comfortable.. not too hot or cold.

I've also heard that they need one more layer than we do, so that's how I typically dress him. He is also waking up still about 2-3 times at night to bf, so if he seems cold or hot at one of his feedings I'll add or remove a layer.

  • It's been 80100 here the last few days in MN. Even when it was mid 60s she was only in a onesie. She gets super overheated really fast and was always breaking out in heat rash. She sleeps better this way too

  • We live in NYC.  Our apartment is always a comfortable temperature.  LO has always worn a diaper and a swaddle to bed, that's it.  No onsies or anything.  He seems happy and sleeps from when we go to bed at midnight until 6:30/7am.

  • I'm with HALO and I'm also a mom and a HALO SleepSack wearable blanket user.  The weather has been fluctuating a lot here.  We have lots of fleece Halo SleepSack Swaddles from DS2, and I just ordered a couple of cotton ones.  Until the cotton ones come, I have been dressing LO in a onsie and the fleece swaddle, with the fan on in our room (he sleeps in a bassinet next to our bed).  On cooler nights, we skip the fan.  We have been running the AC on warm nights too, to help keep the house cooler and prevent overheating.  If you don't swaddle, a wearable blanket is much safer than loose blankets, and very easy to adjust the amount of layers under.

This exactly for me too. I'm in NorCal and the weather has been anywhere from 70-95 in the last week or so. AC is set to 72 in the house at night and LO just sleeps in a short sleeved onesie. When I was swaddling or adding a blanket he would get horrible heat rash and it's been gone since I switched to just a onesie. I check him during his nighttime feedings but he seems to be doing fine.
