May 2013 Moms

would you have membranes stripped a second time?

With my second child I went into labor 36 hours after having membranes stripped.

So this time, At 38 weeks 4 days, dilated hardly,  I had membranes stripped.

It caused a lot of cramping but no labor.

I go to the doctor tomorrow at 39 weeks 4 days, should i have them stripped again? I definitely feel baby is lower this week. Obviously won't know about dilation until I get there.

Re: would you have membranes stripped a second time?

  • I had mine stripped the last two times at 38 and 39 weeks. That did nothing for me though.

  • It might not work but it doesn't hurt to try.  I had them stripped 3x with my first baby.

I had mine done again today. Nothing yet but was already 5 cm and 80% effaced.

I'm a FTM, so I don't know this for sure, but doesn't membrane stripping only work if you are close to ready to going into labor anyway? 38 weeks was probably too early. I would be worried that 39 weeks might be too early too, and that if you had it done tomorrow you would be disappointed if it doesn't work then either. I guess it can't hurt though, especially if you find out you're more dilated. Good luck!

Just curious, why did your Dr want to do it at 38weeks?

Plenty of Drs will start at 37/38 wks. If my dr offers tomorrow I will certainly take her up on it.

ugh, I still don't get this! why are we rushing our babies when all the research shows the longer they are in there, the better?

I've seen so many posts about elective inductions before 40 weeks and membrane sweeping at 37 weeks and how to start labor when your edd isn't even here yet! I get it, we are all uncomfortable and eager to meet our little ones, but do your research and let them stay where they are until they're ready, or there's a medical reason to have them out early.

  • I was 38 weeks 4 days when I had it done.

My daughter came at 39 weeks, so not a huge discrepency.i definitely agree we shouldn't rush our babies.

my motivation once within two weeks of EDD, is that I am going for my second VbAc.

because it is a VBAC, I cannot be induced and my doctors won't let me wait too far past my due date, I just really want to go into labor...period, I don't want to be forced into a c-section.

Just to get the kid out early?

Um no because if I dont go into labor on my own in the next 17 days they are going to cut me open. Thanks

Um, it was a genuine question. Thanks. ETA: I was supposed to read your mind and know you were having a c section, right? JFC.

I am pretty sure you meant that as judgemental to the original poster.

Where did you get your medical degree?

I totally agree with you. It is common knowledge a pregnancy is 40 weeks. It does sometimes suck at the end, and most people are more than ready by then. This is what you signed up for when you got pregnant...it isn't fair to endanger your LO just for your convenience.
