Disappointed

I don't want to be a complainer but I need to vent a little. I went to the doctor again yesterday and am only a 1/2 cm dilated and baby is still really high. My due date is Saturday, she said if nothing changes by the time I come back next Monday she wants to induce. We can choose either 22,23 or 24. I am really hoping that something changes between now and then but she said shes not optimistic of that happening. I know all that matters is that I have a healthy baby but I wish my body would get into action and do something, lol. Supposedly, my anti seizure medicines can cause your body to not progress on its own. I am just disappointed because like everyone, we all want to have natural births. Sorry, thanks for letting me vent! Congratulations to all of you new mommies!

I understand where you are coming from. That happened to me last time. DS had no intentions of coming and I had GD. They induced me at 39 weeks. It was not my favorite thing but was not the worst thing ever. They broke my water at 8am, Pitocin started at 1pm, DS was born at 7:44pm. I am dilated and effaced this time but that doesn't necessarily mean anything either.

Try not to get too discouraged. I had hoped for a natural birth but my body just could not make that happen and after 24 hours of labor, 2.5 hours of pushing my little guy just wasn't coming so I ended up having to get the epidural and a c section. It certainly wasn't for lack of trying, things just were not aligned in a way that let me have the natural birth I hoped for. However, even if you do end up having your less than ideal birth I can assure you that once that healthy baby is in your arms that absolutely nothing else is going to matter. Good luck!

You shouldn't assume that everyone wants to have a natural birth.

  • I can sympathize. With both of my pregnancies I have wanted to go natural but due to low AF on both I have had to be induced. I was able to reach 37 wks this time around. In the end healthy baby and healthy mom is most important. Good luck!
  • Keep in mind that unless there is a medical necessity for an induction, you don't have to induce at 40 weeks.  I've been hearing a lot lately that the new norm is 41w 1d.  It's perfectly normal to go past your due date.  If you're comfortable for going in for an induction, go for it, but if you want more time, you have more time as long as there is no medical reason to get the baby out right away.

    Good luck!

Try not to be to upset.  I know easier said then done.

I had to be induced because my water broke and I did not go into labor on my own. Being induced was something I did not want, but in the end my body just did not do what it was supposed to on it's own.   In the end it all turned out ok.

^This. You have the choice in this. If you don't want to be induced so soon, you don't have to be.

Also, it's kind of a *** move on your OB's part to tell you not to anticipate your body doing anything. You can go from 0-100 today, for all she knows. Eventually, that baby is going to have to come out, and your body is going to do something about it.

    yep, this.

my edd is TOMORROW and at my first ever cervical check today I am not dilated at ALL. baby will come when he's ready.

not saying there's never a medical necessity for an induction. but it's weird to me that you haven't even reached your edd yet and they're already talking induction.

if you're healthy and baby is healthy, refuse the induction.

I agree with this. Unless there is a medical necessity, I've been told that there's no need to induce prior to 42 weeks. For those people that are highlighting OP's reference to a desire for a natural childbirth--I feel like you're nit-picking.....it wasn't really the point of the post. And, of course--it should be assumed that we all want healthy babies, no? Sheesh.

Assuming that everyone wants a natural birth is rude to those planning on having epidurals, or who need inductions for medical reasons.  A "natural birth" is not possible for everyone, let alone even wanted by anyone.  So no it's not nit-picking.

  • Nit-picking would be saying why dont you calm your tits till you hit your actual due date and then discuss induction with your Dr.

If she wants to give birth out in the woods with the unicorns and nymphs, thats her business, but dont assume thats what we all want.

  • I was not thrilled to be induced with my first and then to end up with a c-section, but in the end, you get your little one, one way or another, and it's not so bad. Fingers crossed that your body figures it out on its own and you get to have the birth experience you are hoping for.

Try to hang in there. Keep in mind, not all inductions are awful. I was induced with my first and it was really not that bad. I had a vaginal delivery with no issues and healthy baby boy.

  • Is there a medical reason for you to induce so soon after your due date? Otherwise, you should be allowed to wait until well into week 41 before being induced.

    This.

My doctors were well aware I wanted to labor at home, no meds, deliver quickly at the hospital and move on. But when my body decided it was instead going to put my bp throfh the roof at the last minute, they induced, I gave in to drugs 12 hours later when I hadn't progressed. The broke my water 2 hours later, and 25 after that they emergency c sectioned me for an infection.

It sucks. But the fact is what I wanted was my daughter and they made it happen. I hope yours goes as planned, but remember, the baby is all that matters.

And if someone had said that to me a week ago, I would've cried and told them they didn't get me, so I get it, but the baby is all that matters.

I agree with this and with PP. If you and the baby are both healthy there is no reason to induce. Don't feel bad about pushing back if your doctor is pressuring you without giving you a good reason. You are your own best advocate!

  • I apologize for saying everyone wants natural birth. I did not mean natural in the sense of no epidurals or anything like that, I meant for it to happen naturally not to have medical interventions. I also realize that some people do opt. for medical interventions and there is nothing wrong with that, I apologize. I didn't mean to offend anyone.
