EP ladies...question on leftovers

I have to supplement DD feedings with 2 oz of formula at each feeding because my supply is low. I am starting fenugreek to try to increase my supply so I don't have to supplement, or can limit how many times I supplement. Anyways, when DD has her fill it is normally with the formula and I don't mind having to toss what is left (normally less than an ounce), but I don't want to have to toss my BM if I can increase my supply to what she takes in a day. I am curious what you ladies do when LO does not finish their bottle, especially when the bottle already had to be warmed after being in the fridge. Do you re-refrigerate it? Or toss it?

Re: EP ladies...question on leftovers

  • I will put it back in the fridge for the very next feeding.  Feed that first and then give more milk.

  • Ususally the rule of thumb is to use the bottle within an hour of being heated. Do not re-refrigerate it though because your LO introduced bacteria into the milk. If my DS doesn't finish a bottle, I try to give him the rest like 30 minutes later and he usually takes it. If not, I have to trash it. It sucks but it is better than him getting sick.

  • Once LO drinks from the bottle I toss it if he doesn't come back to it within an hour or two. It sucks but there's not much you can do about it. Maybe give the bottle first and then latch baby on afterwards so she drinks the whole bottle and then let her finish filling up on your boob?

  • Thanks so much! That makes me feel better since I don't have a huge store of supply. I'm hoping the fenugreek helps and I can build my supply up. I really want to give DD as much BM as I can due to all the benefits.
