Side lying BFing

Has anyone mastered this position? Will it be easier when baby is a bit older? Coz right now it feels like he's too small for this. Any tips?

Re: Side lying BFing

  • I don't think I've mastered it, but I did it often with DS1 and now am doing it with DS2. What works for me is putting a pillow underneath LO so he's more in line with my nip. I also wedge a pillow behind my back so I feel more balanced. That seems to work well for us.

  • I had to do it with LO in the crook of my arm when she was first born. At about 5 weeks, she started being able to do true side lying. I think she just needed to be bigger and have a stronger latch.

  • I only tried it once and it hurt my csection incision. I only have the football pose mastered and that is really awkward to do in front of people since it shows my whole stomach :( I don't have any awesome breastfeeding clothing only a few ugly bf nightdresses :(

Walmart.com has some pretty good nursing tanks that are 2 for $25.  They hide your stomach and if you want to be more discrete you just need to wear a regular tank or shirt to cover the chest area.  I've been wearing them every day for ease and they are really comfortable.  I think they run small because I ordered Large and prior to being pregnant and I was a small.

  • I think the key is to have big floppy boobs. A friend of mind with a smaller boobs had trouble with it until her son was a few months old, I however have DD's when nursing and they just flop and squish to wherever they're needed.

  • Side laying is my fav position. I figured out how to nurse from both sides without rolling over. lol I don't know how to describe it, its just about how you angle your body and LOs body. I pull in her feet towards my stomach and her head a little away, kind of like a Y. My boob just ends up at the right height/distance from her.

And I agree - big floppy boobs make it work. Its payback for having big floppy boobs.

This. Works with medium floppy boobs pretty well too. You have to empty the bottom boob first. Sometimes I find it easier with a pillow or my arm under him. This position was the best while I was healing from my c section.

I'm a smaller chested gal Cs right now, but usually an A and love sidelying! Like OSC said, I have to kind of angle my body, so I'm not truly lying straight on my side, more at an angle, but ds does just fine with it. I think the secret for us is that the mattress is firm and I lie with my bottom armunder my head, not around the baby, because that brings him up too high.
  • Small floppy boobs checking in here... I always do side lying at night. I put DD's head in the crook of my arm and it works fine for me.

Yup. Mine are VERY uneven and I've only ever been able to do it lying on my right side.

Exactly this. OSC described it perfect.

I used this position while recovering from c-section. I do have big boobs though. It works well for us during night. Now I'm actually trying to master other positions.

  • I have only trued this twice and even with big floppy boobs I feel like I'm squishing DD. I never put her on a pillow though. I may try again in the future but for now I like use the other popular positions based on what feels comfortable at that time.

P.S. this post made me lol with the small, medium, and big floppy boobs check in. Sorry I blame the lack of sleep. Good times on TB :

  • I prop baby in the crook of one arm and hold my boob in place with the other hand.
