C-sections

How many days in hospital

Was just wondering what the average stay in the hospital is after a c section? I know each situation is different, but just curious.

Re: How many days in hospital

  • I don't remember how many days with my first but for my youngest we went in on Dec 23rd & were out Christmas night. They wanted me to stay another day but I was so ready to be out of there. I made a deal with my doctor that if I had a blood transfusion & my iron levels were up I could go home. It might have been the hormones but I was not handling being in the hospital during Christmas with any maturity what so ever.

  • Mine was unplanned and I spent 3 nights in the hospital. I was supposed to spend 4 nights, but I felt great and really wanted to go home. My OB had no problem discharging me early. I could have actually gone home after 2 nights, but our baby nurse couldn't get to us that early, so I decided to stay one more night.

Unplanned, was four days, three nights, though my doc would've signed for me to go home if I felt I could a day sooner, but while I didn't like being in the hospital, I wasn't quite up to going home yet, so, I stayed the whole time. Though, that's counting from when I was induced Wednesday morning all the way to when they did the c-section that night in that time.

  • I went home just shy of 48 hours after my emergency section..My Mom was SO mad, she tried to get the nurse to make me stay LOL! When she had me 26 years ago, they kept her over a week. My nurse said everything looked good with me and baby and I was ready to go. I just wonder this time around if it will be the same?

  • Mine was unplanned but I ended up staying 5 nights. I needed a blood transfusion after, so that had me staying longer than I intended.

  • I think 3 nights post birth is standard for a csection.  But I've heard of people leaving after two of all is going well.  I'm hoping to get out after two nights next week!  My doc is ok with it but I'm going to play it by ear and see how I feel.  Last time I labored overnight and ended up there four nights total and it seemed way too long.

  • Semi-Planned (It was planned 5hrs before) 5nights and 4days

    Planned 7nights and 6days....

It all depends on the situation and how Mom and Baby are doing.

My first one weighed only 6lbs3ozs but went below 5lbs so they kept both of us since we were rooming together for the extra night to make sure she wouldn't drop any more weight.

My second one, I didn't start bleeding for 3days after the surgery so I was not allowed to leave until I started bleeding and things somewhat returned to normal!

  • I had an emergency csection and stayed 3 and a half days.
  • Went in the Thursday before Labor day, so got to stay until Monday.  I had the option to leave on Sunday, but chose to stay an extra day.
  • Checked in Tuesday afternoon for my induction, checked out Sunday afternoon with my baby. Had the section on Wednesday afternoon.

I had Grace at 7:53a on Wednesday and went home around 2p on Thursday.  The doctor is a friend of mine and was fine with discharging me.  She knew that if I had any problems I could get in touch with her easily.
