Breastfeeding

Not getting enough.

My DD is two weeks old and I've been trying to exclusively breastfeed. She spent her first week and a half in NICU so I was pumping a lot, every couple of hours. I was getting 3to 4 oz. now that she's home, if she sleeps through a feed I'll pump but only get like 1oz if that. And I know it's not hydration because I've been drinking 164oz a day. How do I know she's getting enough when she feeds?! If I can only pump an oz is she only getting an oz?!

Re: Not getting enough.

  • At two weeks her stomach can hold two ounces at most it sounds more like your supply is regulating

  • I am having the same problem ONLY I am exclusively pumping.  I pump for 10 minutes (double pump) every 3-4 hours... at night I go a little longer.

I was getting 200 ML every time but now I am only getting maybe 100-150 ml.

Is there anything I can do to ramp up production?  I have a lot down in the deep freeze but now am only getting enough for a couple feedings.

Our son is 2 weeks old (was 3 weeks early and spent the first week in NICU) He is up to 80 ML every 3 hours.    He weighs 6lb 2 oz and is 19" long.. if that makes a hill of beans difference.

I don't mean to high jack the thread, I am just at a loss as well.  I do want to continue feeding him breast milk ONLY.   We did not breast feed as he had latching issues being early.

  • okay.. thank you...  This is the first time I am EPing.   I breast fed ONLY with our daughter and she fed every hour.

Our LO is eating roughly 2-1/2 oz. every 3-4 hours.

Thank you again for the input.

  • Make sure to eat often as well. Sometimes it's hard to forget when your super busy with a newborn!

Overnight you will want to breastfeed or pump every 3 hours too. This makes a difference in your supply.

If all else fails, keep breastfeeding and pumping often and throw on some lactation herbs. Despite my pumping every 2 hours, my milk supply eventually went down to 1/2 ounce. I started using lactation herbs, a tea called Breastea, and I've seen a steady increase in production ever since. I drink it daily, and make sure to not skip pumpings. You can get it online from breastea.com
