Title: Can I unload on you ladies?
So as a few of you probably remember DH and I quit our jobs and moved back home in December. Since then we've been on a terrible emotional roller coaster of applying/interviewing/not getting jobs. Finally this week DH landed a permanent FT job. Hurray! The problem? It only pays $11 an hour while he is training. Once her receives his license as a mortgage broker he will be bumped up to $12 and be able to receive performance bonuses and commission. That will take 60 days.
I also have been offered a temp job through August making $9.50 an hour. I calculate it will take about 2 gallons of gas to drive to that position, so my take home pay will be about $66. Oh, and we have no idea what to do with DD. (I was told today that I had the job and if I want it I will start on Monday.) Obviously traditional DC is out. FIL is retired but, to be blunt, too lazy and fat to take care of DD for more than a few hours. I have an aunt who does in home DC but I don't know if she can take DD or what she charges. I have another aunt who is raising her 3 yr old grandson who probably would take DD for at least a few weeks for little to no charge, but my derelict cousin who really should be in jail lives with her and that makes me really hesitant. I have another couple relatives that I could probably get to do one day a week, but I really don't want to drop her off at a different place every day.
Oh, and right now we literally have $30 until our next paycheck. We have no credit to speak of and are otherwise screwed. I seriously can't decide if the money that I could make at this job would be worth the childcare issues or if I should say no and just keep looking for work closer to home with a better payout? I seriously feel screwed no matter what we do.
Thanks for reading this and any advice/sympathy you can give.
Re: Can I unload on you ladies?
Just big internet ((((HUGS)))) Sorry you are going through that.
Man! You are just being put through the wringer. I am so sorry. Honestly, I don't think I would take that job. Seems like too much hassle and uncertainty for too little pay. I don't see how it's worth it. I'm so sorry. I know the right job is out there for you. I hope it pops up sooner rather than later.
I seriously can not believe that it is this hard for someone with a MA and nearly 10 years experience in office administration/management to find a position. I have been directly told by 2 people who have interviewed me that they felt that their job would be a "waste of education"... as opposed to me sitting at home approaching filing for bankruptcy, which is better use of my education?
Keep fx for me. Last night I applied to work at the restaurant I worked at 10 yrs ago where I met DH. My aunt's worked there forever and I asked her to try to convince them to give me a chance. It would be night work and would alleviate the need for DC since FIL could handle watching DD by himself from nap time til MIL gets home at 5:30. It seems like a better interim job than the temp one.

yikes...I hope your situation improves soon!
If your job doesn't have advancement possibility the way DH's does, I'd say no and try to make money from home while watching DD. Maybe offer to nanny another kid. You'd make much more and you'd have DD with you. Or something else...but that really seems like better than a risky/impossible DC situation plus making so little per day.
That's $66/day, right? I'm poor and can tell you any job where you make a profit is worth it. I doubt in-home DC will be $300/week. I live in a pretty HCOL area and in-home is about $250. So if you make $66/d that's $330/w, minus $250/w for DC, that's $80/w you would take home. It's not a lot, but it's $80 better than the $0 you take home when you're not working. You could always just do the job for a little while until you find something better or YH is making a little more. The hours of that waitressing job sound like the better option though, because you wouldn't need DC, So I would take that if it's offered.
It is a really crappy situation. I'm sorry you've been dealing with this for so long. FX that you find an arrangement that works, so you guys don't have to worry anymore.
I really hope that you can find something that pays more and that you will be satisfied with!
Last night a friend of ours offered to watch DD until she starts her new job the day after Memorial Day, so for 3 weeks. I am seriously considering taking her up on it, especially if I could get someone else willing to do part of the week (I feel less guilty burdening someone 2 days a week, kwim) that would get us $990 and 3 weeks to figure out a better plan.
Thank you for the advice and T&P, I know that we'll get through this, we just need to catch 1 break that will put us on the right road.
