Pregnant after a Loss

Laying on back?

I heard from a reliable source that pg women should not do any exercises on her back because the weight of the uterus may press on the large blood vessel that brings a major amount of blood from the lower extremities back to the heart inferior vena cava. Now I'm freaking out because when I sleep I always start out on my side but usually end up on my back. I'm thinking that if its bad to be on your back when you workout then it's bad to be on your back when you sleep. Has anyone else run into this problem? Any solutions?

Re: Laying on back?

  • Your body will let you know if it's not cool with you lying on your back.  Yes, there is a major artery there, but some women can sleep on their backs for all 40 weeks.

  • You're fine. Sleeping on your back isn't necessarily prohibited unless you begin to feel short of breath and or uncomfortable.

I slept on my back throughout my entire first tri. At about week 16 I felt dizzy and short of breath after sleeping on my back so I figured that's my body's way of telling me to roll on to my side.

    Hope that helps!

  • Yep, what the PPs said. Your body will let you know when it's no longer ok. For me that didn't happen until about 30 weeks. I felt fine up until that point.

    Just keep swimming.
  • Can't really add but can echo that you're body won't hurt itself.  I start out on my side sleeping, woken up numerous times on my back.  I just roll back onto my side, and figure my body woke me up to move.

. All this. When I started to feel short of breath on my back, I knew it was time to stop. I still wake up on my back a lot, but that's probably why my body is waking me up... To roll over. I did moderate exercises on my back until it felt uncomfortable.

I'm with bananers.  I am 31 weeks and still find myself on my back I try to prop myself to the side though. But I sleep MUCH better and longer on my back and my hips don't go numb and constantly wake me.
