Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Advice, Please.BFP (over 35) when we thought we were out this month.

Congratulations to all of you in this group!

I need some counseling this morning!! We have been trying to conceive #2 for a while & we were not able to start drugs/IUI until May because I needed a rest cycle due to hyperstimulaion of my ovaries.  SO....the past few weeks I've been living it up, so to speak.  Each of the last 3 weeks I've had alcohol at least 3 nights a week & last weekend we were on a mini family vacation in Wisconsin where I had alcohol Thurs-Sunday.      AF was due yesterday & I took a pregnancy test this morning just because I had one, & it's POSITIVE!! OMG I'm SO excited & SO upset at the same time that I've had more alcohol than usual since the conception day 2 weeks ago.  I just need to vent about it---it's frustrating because while we've been TTC with the fertility drugs & procedures I've been sticking to the guidelines re: caffeine & alcohol. I just hope I haven't caused major damage...it's so unsettling. Any comments/criticisms you have for me are welcome.

Me: 42, DH: 43. We are so grateful to have a 2yr old daughter, conceived naturally after 3 miscarriages & no treatments (our Dr. gave us 1 more month to try on our own before advacing to IVF, & we conceived her naturally in January 2010)! Trying since April 2011 without sucess....MD said we were both "fine" & that if it wasn't happening, it was a chromosomal issue. Finally started Follistim 225mcg injections with an Ovidrel trigger November 2012. Bleeding 11 days post Ovidrel on November 25th. Starting the whole lab/Ultrasound/Follistim cycle again on November 27th...

Ha! I conceived in Napa so you can imagine the amount of wine I consumed. After a year of trying and getting no where I didn't think I was pregnant when my period was a week late... So I kept drinking and ha so much caffeine bc I was just so tired! He's fine. What you do in the first couple weeks doesn't matter much just don't keep doing it! Congrats. Boy is it a journey.

When we were trying, my RE told us that alcohol is fine until you get a positive test result.  If you are two weeks from conception then, you should be just fine.  I have also heard that the baby does not share your blood supply for the first six weeks.

     Congratulations!

I don't think you've done any damage to worry about. Think of it this way, most women don't find out they're pregnant until they're 6-ish weeks along and most live a normal daily life until then, including drinking. You should be fine! Although coming from a fellow IFer, it's hard not to analyze every single thing.

  • I'm sure you're fine. I had a similar situation with DD1 after dealing with IF stuff; she was conceived in a tequila and Southern Comfort induced haze of a weekend.

I would call your RE ASAP and maybe talk to him a progesterone, just to be proactive.

  • Thank you SO much for your comments.  I am in tears because I'm so happy but so mad at myself too, although realistically I know many babies are conceived this way!  My husband actually joked this morning that I wouldn't be pregnant if it wasn't for the wine I drank on the conception night!! :)

Thanks again!  I really appreciate the support, & anonymity of this site!! :)

  • I happened to drink more in the month or two that I didn't know I was pregnant than I had in probably the entire 2 years before that. DS is 100 percent healthy. Thank God!

Congrats on your BFP!  Last summer, for me, was really fun and DH and I drank away the hot days.  We were not TTC, but BAM, I got pregnant and stopped drinking as soon as AF was a few days late (I never got a BFP from a HPT..had to get a blood test).  DD is just perfect.

I had a meltdown too when I found out. I had just finished my Ph D and DH surprised me with a girls trip to Vegas. Normally I drink very little but hey, when in Rome... Or Vegas :. Needless to say I drank a few more than usually celebrating what felt like a never endless process. I told my OB about every drop I consumed and she laughed and me and said I was fine and not to worry.

  • 'Till about 5/6 weeks the baby is insulated from your blood stream to a large degree.  After that point you begin to share things that are in your blood stream.  Your baby should be just fine.

  • As a lot of people have said, I think you're fine.  My DH and I weren't TTC, but I was late and decided to take a test on a Sunday just to play it safe ... BAM positive.  I went to the doctor on Monday to confirm and yup - 5 weeks pregnant!  I knew the nurse very well and when she asked "do you have any questions?", I said "yes, I was playing 21 cup beer pong on Friday and then drank at the lake all day Saturday ... is the baby going to be ok?".  She chuckled and said "yes, but don't do it anymore".  I was terrified thinking about it, but knew it was ok and DS is here and healthy!!!!

Congratulations to you - so exciting!!!

  • Don't worry about it! The first few weeks your baby is just a ball of multiplying cells (no significant brain or organ development quite yet), there is not much that some alcohol will impact at that point. Congrats and enjoy your pregnancy!
