Social Smiling Early?

My is 4 weeks exactly today and yesterday night he smiled at me while he was awake, he was making faces and I tapped his nose and the picture that is included is what I got in response.. and he didn't pass gas or poop.

Then this morning he smiled at me and it lasted more than a few seconds and he was wide awake again. So do you think it is possible he can already be social smiling? I am going to try and make him smile again tonight. I wuv his toothless grins. =)

Re: Social Smiling Early?

  • Aww, so cute!!  My LO started smiling at me around the same time, probably 4.5 weeks, and then pretty consistently by week 5.  He's 9 weeks now and such a smiley kid, I love it so much!!
  • Yes, DS2 started smiling at the same time as your LO. At first I thought I was nutty for thinking he was socially smiling so early (DS1 was about 5.5 weeks) but it was obvious he was smiling AT us. He did it several times, with DH too, etc. Now he's 6 weeks and he smiles all the time. Love it. :)

  • My DD started at 4 weeks as well. The thing that always gets her to smile is pulling her little chin down like I'm making her talk. Also we do patty cake and everytime we do the roll it action she smiles. She's 6 weeks now and those smiles include little coo sounds that almost sound like laughing. Best part of the day!

  • To the OP

4 weeks is a normal timeline. Both of my kids were smiling and giggling by then, not early, totally normal.

Did you have an actual question or is this an AW post?

Did you actually read the post or did you just want to chime in? Op clearly asked for thoughts on her lo's social smile.

I've read in many more places that 6-8 weeks is the norm. I did have an actual question, which, if you would have looked past the first line, you would have found it...thank you for your contribution to this thread.

To everyone else, I thank you for your insight. Here is to more of this smiles and grins that get us through the day. =)

  • There is a big cognitive jump around 4 weeks.  My DD was a very serious little thing but my DS was a smiler and was smiling by then as well.  Enjoy :-)
