Baby Names

Elena?

DH and I are expecting Twin Girls. Until last night I thought we were set on names, but now DH is second guessing.

We both like Audrey for one of the girls, but are torn on baby girl #2.

What are your thoughts on Elena? How would you pronounce it? Would the variations in pronunciations drive you crazy?

Re: Elena?

  • I like it. My first instinct is to pronounce it uh lee nuh, because the only Elena I have known pronounces it this way. But I also love uh lay nuh.
  • I would pronounce it ell-LAY-nah.  The numerous possible pronunciations would probably drive me a little crazy, but I really like this spelling.

  • My Italian MIL is Elena, pronounced Ellenuh, and it's out top choice if we have another girl. I think it works quite well with Audrey!

It want to use alliteration you could spell it Alaina or Alayna, but I do like the Elena spelling.

  • I LOVE Elena and am actually considering it for our girl. I pronounce it like uh-lay-nuh.

I agree with all of this.

May I suggest Elise as another option instead of Elena? I think it is equally sophisticated as Audrey.

Exactly this. My daughter is Elena and even I sometime go between "uh" lane uh and "ee" lane uh. She is only two but I've never had anyone butcher the pronunciation. Great choice :

  • Elena was my grandmother's name.  Being Russian, I pronounce it the Russian way Ye-le-na or in an Americanized version Eh-le-na.

It's on my list for a possible future daughter, along with the similar sounding Alina and Ilana/Elana
