Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Carrying Baby

Summer is finally here in the midwest (ok, at least for a little) and we are finally getting outside!!!!
Wondering what you are carrying your LO around in this summer? Or, are you letting them run free!? My DS is 13 months and we are so close to walking, but there will be festivals and parades, camping, cookouts, and other outdoor activities that we will need to stay close.  We have a jogging stroller for walks around the neighborhood. I still have my front carrier for chores around the house, though that only works for a little on my back since he's 20lbs!!

What are you using this summer??
Stroller, backpack carriers, wagons, bikes???? Other awesome things that I'm not thinking about?

Re: Carrying Baby

  • We let Ds walk as long as he can, and bring a stroller for when he gets tired.

  • Last summer, we did a combination of stroller, Ergo on my back, walking holding our hands, or walking on a leash (depending on crowds, danger factor, etc).

  • DS likes to be pushed around in his cozy coupe car, we hold his hand while he walks or use the stroller...or just resort to holding him in our arms. I use the Ergo sometimes too, but with temps already in the high 80s here I doubt I'll be using it outside this summer...I get so hot wearing him in that thing!

  • I never got comfortable with the carriers so we just use a stroller. depending where we are, we'll let him walk until he's tired then plunk him in the stroller.

  • We bring both a stroller and an Ergo that we just put underneath. In busy places, I'll bring a single stroller for our two year old and the carrier for Asher. If my two year old wants to walk, Asher can ride for a while. I'm big into baby wearing, I think because I find it easy to maneuver in a crowd and my kids sleep better worn than in a stroller. We also have a  wagon that we've used to go to the farmers market and just walk around town. It has a seat that lifts up to store snacks and toys ect and the kids think it's really fun.

  • DS is getting really good at walking with us and holding our hands when we are walking somewhere. Depending on where we go and what we are doing I usually try and let him walk until he is tired or doesnt want to. I have a three wheel Jeep stroller and a slightly smaller stroller that we usually take one or the other with us for when DS needs it.

  • I use a stroller, after about 6 months DS outgrew the carrier.  I al currently working on getting DD, who is now 3, to walk on her own or stay in a stroller.  I would really avoid carring your LO so much.  There is certainly no need to be carried around the house.

Well duh. I don't carry him around all day. We have plenty of play time on the floor, but when I'm hanging laundry on the line outside, I'm not going to let him get clawed up by acorns and sticks.  Sorry that I didn't clarify that I was more interested in learning about how you manage your LO's in public spaces.

  • My DD (15mos) rides in the ergo or sits in the stroller or we carry her.  She's a peanut though, just barely 20 pounds now.  She is just now starting to walk so sometimes she wants to hold our fingers and walk.
Hallelujah, it's a miracle, I have children AND a signature!

Well, I don't think it's a big deal to let them walk and crawl around outside - even if there are acorns and sticks. I hardly think that's a big deal.

Ditto this. In fact, I encourage DS to sit on the ground and touch leaves, grass, flowers...Not only is it exposing him to nature, but I think we put kids in bubbles too often.

  • I hardly ever carry baby, unless we're near a street. If she gets tired, she goes in the stroller. She's super good about holding hands when we're walking. We're going back to Disneyland in February, and I will be "one of those moms" with a "leash" on her kid. She'll want to walk some, I know it. We used it at the zoo a few weeks ago and it worked beautifully.

I love when DS touches grass, dead leaves, sticks, etc. But my backyard is COVERED in sticks and acorns. Serious. And he's still crawling, not walking on his own.  There really isn't much grass out there. We are renting (and hopefully not here for too much longer) or I would fix the yard myself. I love the feel of grass in your toes, but seriously, my baby would get cut up back there  lol Usually we just play in the front yard where there IS grass :)

  • For us it depends on where we are.  Hiking or crowded venues get the carrier.  You may need a different one if 20lbs is too much for your back.  My kid is over 25lbs and DH and I can carry him for hours on our back.  I think our carriers are good up to 45lbs.

We'll do strollers for walks, or open areas where he might want to take a nap.

    Otherwise he walks/runs with us.

  • DD is 15 months tomorrow and I will be wearing her in the Ergo this summer when we are out.  She weighs 21 pounds right now.  She loves the Ergo and should work great for us!
