I guess it depends on your doctor. My OB does an u/s at 20 weeks and they complete it at this time bc the baby is more developed- some pay and have an elective. Most a/s are done between 18-20 weeks.
I'm going to the doctor at 16 weeks and I've had an ultrasound each visit so far. Will this be a normal one or would they check for the sex? I don't want any guesses so I'd rather wait until 20 if they aren't sure.
I am coming out of lurking to say that some people who have other complications may get monitored more closely and get extra ultrasounds, not just for fun. I found out the gender at 16 weeks because the MFM was checking on the heart for a defect.

Diagnosed with Anti little c antibodies. DS1 7.11.11 - Anaemia and Jaundice. 10 days in the NICU, 1 exchange transfusion and 4 blood transfusions. DS2 29.8.13 - Anaemia 7 days in the NICU and 1 exchange transfusion. Both are now happy and healthy.
