Baby Names

More fit for boy, girl, or both?

DH is set on Rowan Thomas for our little boy. I really liked it at first but now I'm a bit confused because I've been finding out that people are naming their daughters Rowan.

Unisex names aren't really my favorite. I personally see this as very masculine almost warrior-esque name and not feminine at all.

What are your thoughts?

  • I find it more masculine but I know people have been using it for girls. How about Ronan or Roman?

  • I love Rowan for a boy...it's totally masculine to me. Not a fan of it being used on a girl at all, although I love Rowena.

There was a post yesterday about a little girl named Lucas. People will use ANYTHING on a girl, so if that's tr only thing holding you back, I wouldn't let it bother me.

  • I personally see Rowan as a very masculine name too.  I don't see how people could use it for a girl.  I don't love the name, but if I loved it I think I would go for it.  Love Thomas as a MN.

  • I kind of like that! I love different names. I dont think of a girl at all. I have been trying to think of unique names for boys and its hard because you want them to sound masculine. Well I do anyway. My name is Aisha (asia) and I always loved it because no one has it. Thats what I want for our kids.

This, although I'm not crazy about Roman either.  Ronan would be a good choice potentially.

  • I may be the oddball, but Rowan has always seemed more feminine to me. I like the name for either, though.
  • I love Rowan! Only on a boy!
  • It's a boy name. But I don't really side eye it on a girl.

  • Whew, you ladies are making me feel better already! I don't necessarily hate that it can be used on a girl but I'd rather it be tom-boyish name for a girl versus giving my son an oddly feminine name.

  • I see it as very masculine. I've never heard of instances it on it being used on a girl although i'm sure there are some that have. I know a female named "Michael" any boys' name will try to be used on females...I wouldn't worry about it.

  • I consider it unisex. I've never met a male Rowan, but I know several females.

  • I see Rowan as a boy's, maybe Rowen as a girl's name? I think Brooke Shields named her daughter Rowan so maybe that's the connection people make.

    There's also Roan.

  • I see it as both. We actually really loved it for a boy or a girl. We're having a girl and decided on Rowan Delaney. But had we had a boy it probably would've been Rowan Douglas. Soooo I'd definitely go with it!

  • I had never heard the name until I worked with a woman named Rowan (currently 35 years old).

Historically it is a male name.

  • It's a boy's name, but I've seen it on girl's a lot lately. It's a great name! DH and I loved it, but decided we liked Roman better for our LO. We get lots of compliments on how it's a strong name, and I think it has less of a chance of being used for a girl.

But like PPs said, there have been girls named Lucas and Michael recently, so who knows. I don't think you can go wrong with Rowan, Ronan or Roman.

  • Use the name that you and your DH chose. You can't help that parents are giving their girls masculine names.

It doesn't sound feminine to me at all.

  • Boy.  Once again a perfectly good boy name turned girl Angry

  • I really hope Rowan stays a boy name.  It is way to masculine for the girls, especially when there are so many pretty feminine girl names.  I like Rowan for a boy, but NOT a girl.

  • It's a boy name.

Even if people "know someone who named their daughter ___", it's still a boy name someone used on a girl.
