Shaving? yep..I want to know how everyone is doing it?

Ok I think it is difficult enough to shave my tree trunk legs lol....but I am failing on keeping up with the lady parts.  We can't see anything of course which makes it hard, so I'm nervous to go to down with a razor.  I used my DH's old beard trimer over the weekend which worked great.  But with my internal exams just around the corner, I would really like to take care of the "more sensitive areas"

So do I just need to suck it up and spend a good half hour in the shower and go to town?  Or are you guys not worrying too much about "those areas" and letting nature be?  I know Doctor's and nurses dont care but it has really gotten out of hand over the last few months and I'm feeling quite embarassed and I'm not willing to spend the money on a wax.....ouch!

  • I was wondering the same thing.  Made a feeble attempt a few days ago to clean things up, but now I'm a bit itchy as stuff grows back.

If I can tag on another question to this thread: STMs - what was your experience with this following the birth. As in, if you did clean things up before labor, did it make recovery any more or less irritating?

  • I sit on the side of the bathtub and shave without looking. You can also get a mirror if you are not comfortable doing it without looking. The skin is very sensitive during pregnancy and I have nicked myself. It doesn't hurt, just more annoying than anything. I try to do it the night before an exam (so I am not bleeding, ect). ;-)

  • The other day I shaved..... stood in front of the full length mirror, wash cloth & soap, lather, shave, wipe clean, etc. Repeat. For a long time. haha
  • With a razor and shaving cream. I've been shaving the same area for 15 yrs, I pretty much know what I'm doing.
  • I have given up. I stopped being able to see down there a month ago and tried to shave once after that point and cut myself pretty badly. I really don't care what it looks like any more! It's honestly the least of my worries.

ETA: It used to be in style to have everything in a "full bush." That was way before my time, but I'm going with it.

This.  I don't really understand all the confusion over this.  Just swipe the razor and feel for any missed spots.  Think about it, does your husband use a mirror to shave his face in the shower? He can't see his own face either and mine does just fine! :)

  • I can pretty much do it from instinct but do sometimes stand in front of a mirror. On a side note to not being able to see that area, is anyone else having trouble peeing in the cup at their appointments? TMI I know but I just need to know I'm not alone lol
  • I get Brazilian waxes. My waxer says she does tons of pregnant women, especially in the later months of pregnancy and at the end when they are about to deliver so that they don't have to be shaved in the hospital. It's painful, but it's also quick and worth it if you want to be totally smooth.

This. It takes little extra time to make sure I didn't miss a spot, but it's really not that hard.

  • I took DH's beard trimmer to things last week.  lol.  I knicked myself a bit but it seemed safer to do it that way than to go at things blind.
  • My vote is for getting waxed.

Yes! I peed all over my hand last time.

As for shaving, I really don't care if I'm hairy or not. I trimmed up about a month ago with DH's trimmer and a mirror just to keep it in control but at this point, shaving is the least of my concerns.

lol me.  I am glad they take my bp before because making it into that cup is causing me a lot of stress Big Smile

  • I pulled the "Stevie Wonder" yesterday and did it blind as a bat. I'm sure the doctors have seen better, but I'm sure they have seen worse. The problem is, I gave myself a bit of a panic attack when, about two hours later, I wiped and there was a little bit of blood. I got all excited thinking it was finally time. Alas, I am just a piss poor shaver. :-)

  • With DD, I couldn't afford to get waxed so I just shaved blindly. It may not have looked the best and I may have missed a little bit here or there, but it worked. This time around, though, I'm waxing.

YES! I had this problem the last time I had to and I was thinking, "What the heck?" I had a hard time reaching down there to hold the cup though! Glad I'm not alone!

As for shaving...eh...I try to do my best every now and then. I used to shave daily so I know that area very well. But my lady bits have been swollen and super sore the last month so I only attempt a quick shave about once a week now. Mainly it's because it gets too itchy not to keep up with (since I'm used to it is always being super smooth). I really don't care what it looks like when baby comes though.

Then there are my tree-trunk legs as well. :S I only shave them about once a week now too but I used to shave them almost daily. It's just too uncomfortable to bend over to shave them so I've kind of given up.

  • I shave blindly.  After I shave an area I feel around to make sure that I didn't miss anything. I've not knicked myself yet in two pregnancies.

  • I'm not shaving. To those who can do it blindly,  kudos. My external area has changed so much that I couldn't shave by feel anymore. I had a surprise internal last week. Honestly I think everyone's being a bit silly about it. She was literally down there for less than 10 seconds and looked maybe for 2 seconds. I say if it stresses you out, just say f@$& it and go 70s porn star.

my husband hates my bush. But I hate my hip pain, carpal  tunnel, and carrying around 30 extra pounds. I think we're even.

  • I had my Strep B test this a.m. so have had recent experience in this department!

I've been using the trimmer on the end of my razor by "feel" just to keep things from getting too overgrown.  I also shave (again, kind of by feel but I can also still see just a little bit) the upper part of my thighs where the hair begins/ends .. but nowhere else.

Its a fair compromise I think...  There's still hair there, but not so much that its shocking to the doctors & nurses.

And yes, add me to the list of people that is having a really hard time peeing in that cup!  I can't see a darn thing.

I totally had trouble doing this today!!! I laughed at myself pretty good when I realized that I barely got any in...

  • I just have to throw this in there: As a nurse, pubic hair DOES NOT SHOCK US. It's um... normal. My OB has been clear that pubic hair during pregnancy is actually healthy, it's meant to protect that area (especially from infections). That being said, I miss shaving, but not enough to try to do it. Even if I could go by memory, I can barely reach, and I really don't care. If it bothers my DH, he isn't foolish enough to say anything :)

  • I am going to get a brazilian one of these days. I'm just afraid of how bad it's going to hurt. When I am not pg... I have to pop advil before I do it.

I am ok with the peeing in the cup, but this morning when putting the lid on I spilled half of it out... on myself. YUCK!!!!

This.  I wait until after DS1 goes to sleep and just spend as much time as I have to since I can't see anything.  Just have to take my time and be very careful.

  • I just go blind, I don't carry too big and I have long arms, so I don't struggle with it too much.  Apparently, I did an ok job last time around because the labor and delivery nurse I had complimented me!!! hahaha....she was like "you're so well manicured down there!" then she went on to say how crazy some women let it get and even said "I mean, it's not like I'd recognize them at the mall and think "hey, that's the woman with the huge bush", but it gets pretty crazy!"

    She was pretty funny.

I have been having trouble with the pee cup too! Lol
  • I shaved with #1 and I was so sensitive, it made labor and recovery a little more uncomfortable than it should have been. Plus it was SO HARD to do. Mirrors and stretching and odd positioning...

I waxed with #2 and felt the same.... overly sensitive down there

This time around Im just using trimmers to keep it trimmed close and I can already tell its not going to bother me when I give birth or afterwards.  And honestly I dont think the nurses/doctor even care. Once you have your legs up in stirrups pushing a baby out while screaming, the last thing on anyones mind is hair LOL

  • My husband does it. We laugh and giggle through it. If he didn't offer, I would just go with the full bush look.
