SIDS

I just read a post that sleeping with a fan reduced the risk of SIDS because it keeps the room cool and ventilated. Has anyone heard of this or done this?I keep my air on 72 degrees but I still find myself checking him to make sure he is not hot

Re: SIDS

  • I just don't want him to get a cold. I know that I wouldn't put the fan right up to him. I would make sure it's far away to where he is comfortable. Just worried about him getting a cold or cough. What about a ceiling fan?

In the winter months we change our ceiling fans to circulate air upward instead of downward. So they still circulate air, just not directly at you. We have a ceiling fan going in our bedroom along with a cool mist humidifier...the furnace make our house dry. We will keep his room the same when we move him over there.

  • We use a fan, I too have heard it helps keep the air circulating in the room which can help prevent SIDS but it's more because DH & I are both fromFlorida and have never been able to sleep without a fan.

ETA with the temperature - it's better for them to be a little cool than hot, we use a fan & the air is always on at like 68 degrees and she's never felt too cold.

  • I have read that between 68-70 is the ideal temperature.  We keep the heat on 68 with DS in a swaddle blanket, and he never wakes up cold or hot.

Germs cause illness, not a fan.

  • We kept a ceiling fan on with DS1, because of this reason and are doing the same with DS2.

  • Babies (or anyone else, for that matter) cannot catch a cold from a ceiling or oscillating fan. It also would not cause a cough, unless it dried out his respiratory system (which can be counteracted by a humidifer). This is the same principle of going outside with wet hair when it's cold and your mother scolding you that you'll catch a cold if you do - it's an old wives tale and not true. The only thing that causes a cold is germs.

We keep our house at 68 degrees because that's where we're comfortable. At night we have a ceiling fan going full blast (for air circulation) and an oscillating fan going medium blast (for white noise). DS sleeps comfortably in a swaddle sleep sack.

  • 68 degrees on cool or heat?

  • During my infant CPR class the instructor talked about fans reducing the risk of sids.

Um, whatever it takes?  If you live in a hot climate, you'll need to cool to 68. If you live where it's cold, the heat will be on to reach that temp.

  • Does the fan just need to be blowing in the room. It doesn't have to be directly on him or he doesn't need to directly feel it?

  • The recommended temperature is 68-72 degrees.  And yes, a fan can help reduce the risk of SIDS.  Not only because of keeping the temp down, but more importantly by circulating the air in the room.  I really like this list of safe sleep tips Halo has on their website, plus a great list of other additional helpful links.  https://www.halosleep.com/safe_sleep_for_baby/safe_sleep_for_babies/

72 is plenty warm, it could be lower and he'd be fine. With a newborn turn the heat up a bit at night, but still never above 68.

A fan anywhere in the room will help b/c it will circulate the air, it shouldn't be facing anyone, newborn or older.

This. Although, our apartment is the hardest thing EVER to get the temp to regulate in, so it's set at 70 at night and our bedroom is probably 67-68.

Any air circulation is good, so a ceiling fan is perfect.

  • I heard of this from a video the hospital showed me during recovery.

Since then I've heard that many things suspected to cause SIDS are created via guess work.
