Ok---so a few years ago I was student teaching and I had a 9 year old girl in my class named "La-a" As I was calling role, I said Lu-uh Williams? The girl stands up and goes "my NAME is LA DASH A. The dash ain't silent!"

Now that we are expecting, this story comes up any time we discuss baby names. Just thought I would share:)

Yeah, people name their kids odd things, but the La-a story, along with Oranjello, Lemonjello, and Shithead, are urban legends with racist/classist underpinnings. Why racist and/or classist? Because they are told with a wink-wink, nudge-nudge "aren't some people idiots?" tone that mocks African-American naming traditions.

Maybe it is made up. I honestly have never met one but one of my good friends is a pediatrician in Cali and I ask what the weirdest name she ever encountered was and she said LA and she pronounced it LA until corrected. Maybe she lied but I don't know why she would feel the need too but honestly I do not put it past someone to name their kid this.

Every teacher, L&D nurse, and pediatrician on the planet has met a La-a. And yet the name is never ranked on the ssa. Which means if you hear this story someone is lying to you.

Ok the ssn site only shows the top like 1000 names right? Maybe I'm confused but I have never understood this reply.

Chelscole: They only list the first 1000 on the main page, but you can open a PDF somewhere on there that lists all the names down to those that were given to 5 children (they won't list names less popular than that for privacy reasons). However, I scoured that list for 2011 and did not see "La-a". I guess you could say that's because it was given to less than 5 kids, but intuition tells me that it likely wasn't given to any...
