Do you make more than your DH/SO?

All this talk of work and $ got me wondering if anyone here makes more than their SO/DH.

I used to make more than my DH and then when I had my DS, I changed jobs for a better work/life balance, so I took a pay cut, which put me below DH's income.

Re: Do you make more than your DH/SO?

  • I always have except for 2012 when he made more than me because I was off without pay for 6 weeks.

We are really close though, like within $5k each year.  But my job still has some growth potential since I'm new in the role, he is close to the top for his job.

  • I make about four times what h makes, but he's in school and only works about half the amount I do. He loves it.

    I don't.

I once asked MH what he would think if I made more money than him...He told me: "That would be awesome!  More money."

I don't get where these men who would be butthurt over their SO making more money than them are from.

This was totally my DH!  He LOVED that I made more than he did and always said he would be totally supportive if I had wanted to stay at my previous job.

He always figured more money for the family is more money for the family regardless of where it came from.

I know a lot of men feel threatened by it, but like you, I don't really understand that.

  • My salary is near double what DH was making. He quit his job to finish school because of that!

  • I would make about 3k more than DH, but he works overtime so he beat me last year :D

  • DH makes twice as much as I do

  • I make a significant amount more than the ex.  He does landscaping for a living.  He loves what he does but it doesn't pay crap.  I'm no millionaire by any means, but I make enough to get by.  And he was a little "butthurt" over that but it wasn't a big deal to me.  Loving what you do, to me, is worth a lot.

  • I used to make more per hour than DH, but only by like 50 cents. He had the opportunity to work overtime whenever he wanted to he ended up bringing more in annually.

  • I make more than H. He's in school, and only works a little.

  • I make a lot more than DH for now. He has a degree in Mechanical Engineering...and I am a teacher....so you would think he'd make a lot more. Eventually he will make like 3 times what I do, but right now he's doing a co-op and getting a second engineering degree.  His work is paying for the second degree though, so if you add that in to his salary, we probably make about the same.

We also just started getting insurance from his work...it was twice as much as we were paying out of my check, but it's much better insurance...and with DH's health issues, we needed better coverage. My old insurance stopped paying for his diabetic testing strips...WTF?!? And the strips are really expensive out of pocket...like $25 for 50 strips...he's supposed to test 3 times a day. His insurance covers them, so our co-pay is $16 for 100 strips. There were lots of other things we were having to pay out of pocket for as well...including a significant amount towards two of his surgeries.

So after calculating all of that, he probably makes close to what I make...as a co-op, that works 32 hours a week.  Remind me, why did I choose teaching? Lol, jk.

This is us.  He also has the option of lots of overtime which increases his salary even more.  Though I carry the health benefits which are better (and cheaper) than what we could get through his job.

  • I make more now and have better benefits.  Dh doesn't get sick time or vision insurance but I do. When he finishes school, hell make more than me.

  • I certainly do... DH is a SAHD, but I also made more than him before that happened... which is why it was an easy decision on who would stay at home...

  • H makes slightly more, but it's very close. He has the potential to make a lot more eventually, but he just started at a new company two years ago.

  • DH definitely makes more than I do! I have a small part time job that pays 50 an hour for a couple hours a week and he has a salary job as an engineer. I just need to cover my student loans.

  • My husband makes 4 x the amount I do. I'm a teacher and paid well compared to most teachers.  However, I do think I work harder than DH.  Which is kind of frustrating!?

  • My job is all around better than DH's.

I make almost 10K more than him, I have a very flexible schedule and I rarely work overtime unless I choose to and I love my job. DH does carry the benefits.

  • DH makes more than I do.  If we had to use his benefits though it would cost us 6K more a year in premiums with a 10K deductible per person....

In my first marriage I made more than my ex, and he really had issues with it.  He quit his accounting job without telling me because he thought he could play a pro sport and make more than I did.  Needless to say, that never worked out for him....

This. H makes more than 2x what I make. Health insurance is the main reason I'm still working. Mine is covered entirely by employer, as compensation for not being able to pay much in salary. I only have to pay for DD's share, which isn't much. H's health insurance is ridiculous - it's really just catastrophic coverage. Or maybe I'm just spoiled by mine!

  • DH makes nearly twice as much as me.  Although his base salary is only about 1/4th  more than mine, he works 3-15 hours of mandatory OT every week which really increases his annual pay.  His job also doesn't require him to make contributions to his definied pension plan or for our family health benefits (medical, dental, vision) that offer awesome coverage.  If you were to factor in all of those benefits into his salary that is easily another $10,000 annual on his salary.

I have the potential to earn more and am moving up the ladder at work.  If I were to leave my current position I could probably make what DH makes after OT.  But, I like my job and the flexibility that it offers and our work week is 35 hours.  I prefer to get small increases and stay where I am than to make more in a more demanding position that would probably require travel and long hours during the week.  I prefer to work 8-4pm every day instead.  Also, if I had a more demanding job I would probably need and prefer a nanny which would eat up all the extra money I make, so it's pointless to make more just to pay it right back out and still spend less time with my child.

  • We make almost exactly the same. Technically, he grosses a little more right now, but I net more, because our family's benefits come out of his paycheck, not mine. He forces me to work. Stick out tongue
