DH and I attended a birthing class yesterday. I really do feel like we got a lot of great information, but the videos that they showed were ridiculous! In one, the couple got all dressed up (I mean here in a fancy dress and him in a suit) and they slow danced until it was time for her to push! In another one, she was eating the whole time she was in labor. I know there are a few hosptials that let you do that now, but the hospital that I'm delivering at (the same hospital that offered this class) only allows ice chips and lolipops.I know that this videos are supposed to be informative, but they were really hard to take seriously.
Slow dancing??? wow, my labor was walking 100s of time around and around in the hall, going pee a ton, going pee even more ...it was bad about every five min... attempting to sleep but with nursing in and our it was more like resting. Listening to H snor during contractions, visitors coming and going, the epi!!!! and then two hours of hard corp pushing!!!! No dressing up unless my robe counted over the hospital gown and def no food or slow dancing.
LOL...our class showed a pretty ridiculous video too. During her early labor, when they were at home, it showed them hand in hand turning in circles under a tree in their backyard (super cheesy!) and the dad described their day as "very enjoyable. We spent the afternoon dancing, holding each other, and we even went on a hike." ...a hike? Let's ask mom how her day was.
Glad it's not just me. DH and I went to a birthing class before our first child was born, and it was so corny and outdated that we laughed hysterically and uncontrollably during the entire video! Man, I'm sure we looked really mature. Then I had the giggles for the rest of the class! Couldn't stop!!!

Re: How do they expect you to take this seriously?
The slow dance thing was probably this, which is a legit laboring position:
