Eating foods cooked with alcohol?

I need some advice ladies. A good friend of mine from college is taking me out for lunch this weekend and she picked a really nice Italian place for us to go. I just learned that just about everything on their menu including the pasta sauces are cooked with wine. I know that alcohol should cook out of food, but what about in a sauce? If there is even a chance that eating something from their menu could be harmful, I'll ask her if we can go somewhere else. I'm sorry if I sound silly, I just don't want to do anything that could hurt the baby.

  • Most likely the sauce is cooked too.  When you cook with alcohol it just turns to sugar.  Should be fine.  The onl thing I WOULDN'T (personally) eat is tiramisu -- I believe the booze is added after the cake is cooked.  So you're literally just eatign booze-soaked ladyfingers.

It's fine.  I love going to restaurants like that while pregnant, it is my only chance to get something that at least has the flavor of wine!

This. I still cook with wine :)

The heat cooks off all the alcohol and only the flavor is left.

This. And even if there were traces left, it wouldn't be enough to be a cause for worry. Enjoy your meal!

  • I'm making a risotto with white wine tonite and not even thinking twice about it.
  • The alcohol cooks off...and even if it didn't cook all the way off, there is most likely less than a glass of wine in a family-sized batch of sauce anyway. I'd definitely "indulge!"

  • I would have no problems eating anything cooked with alcohol. I also have no problems having a sip of wine here or there either.

  • I'm a freak.  I cooked with alcohol for the second time during this pregnancy, last night and I swore that I could feel the alcohol burn in the back of my throat when I was eating the chicken marsala.  Also last time I cooked with it I did some googling first and something I read said that it doesn't actually cook off, but that the amount of alcohol that winds up in your food is so minimal....  but since I swore I could feel the alcohol burn last night, I ditched mine and my 4 year old son's plates and made us some eggs for dinner.   :)

  • We cook with wine and beer all the time.  The amount you generally use to make a dish for 4 people is a lot less than one drink.  Most of the alcohol does not actually cook out of the food (Elton Brown did a show on this once and the science showed that not much cooked out).  But, I also have a small glass of wine or beer occasionally with the ok from OB, so I'm not worried about the small amount in the food.

Well shiit. I've had tiramisu several times during this pregnancy....oops...

There really isn't that much alcohol in tiramisu.

    The bolded.

Exactly. I'd eat a big a** piece of tiramisu right now, and wouldn't feel a single ounce of guilt! Well, maybe for the insane amount of calories, but not for the liquor :)

  • Ok now I have to beg DH to take me to Carrabbas for tiramisu. And FYI they cannot make a virgin Blackberry sangria if anyone is wondering. As soon as I feel up to it after LO is born I'm headed straight there!
  • The amount of alcohol in the food depends on how long it is cooked after the wine is added. I would think that something like tomato sauce would simmer for a long time and most of the wine would cook out. If you're unsure, you can always ask the waiter about how long the alcohol cooks in certain dishes. However, I would just eat it and not worry about it. I have indulged in a glass of wine here and there, though.

That's why I said "personally" in my initial post.  I'm sure it is perfectly fine, but it is the one form of 'Cooking with alcohol" that I've avoided.
