Baby Names

Baby Girl - Quinn?

What are the thoughts on Quinn for a girl? I'm having a near impossible time coming up with a name for our girl and DH tossed this out there and I'm not hating it, but now loving it either. Gut feelings?

We have a son named Owen - any other girl suggestions would be welcome. (Middle name is Linda, after my mother who passed away, so it's set, but making it difficult to find something that flows as well)

Re: Baby Girl - Quinn?

  • I am very sad that Quinn is more commonly used for girls now. I like it but only for a boy.

  • I think I'm the oddball on this board, but I do like Quinn for a girl. It's kind of a guilty pleasure name for me, though, not one that I would actually use. But I do think it's pretty. Quinn Linda isn't a great flow, but family meaning is more important than flow sometimes :)

  • I love it!!! It is also one of our choices too!
  • I absolutely love the name Quinn and think it goes great with Owen.

I could see how finding something to flow well with Linda would be difficult but Quinn Linda sounds fine. It's a nice nod to your mom.

  • I dont like last names as first names...you know we only like old names around here.Wink
  • I think it's a lovely unisex name, although I know many people on TB would prefer to see it as a boy's name only.

  • Are there any other names that you have considered that would flow with Linda? I personally don't think the flow is that important compared to the sentimental value of a family name. My DS name follows a 2-2-2 pattern, which doesn't quite roll off the tongue but that wasn't as important as using my Grandpa's name.

Are you looking for suggestions as well?

  • I have a friend with a DS Owen and DD Quinlin - I love both names and both together!

I also love the name Elle - but with the huge popularity of Ellie, Ella and the like, I had started leaning away from it, and Elle Linda seems like way too many "Ls". I also really like the name Sarah, but have issues using that name based on current relationships I have with some friends with that name (not bad issues, more like - I don't want it to seem like the baby is named after them - which is silly, I know, especially considering the popularity of the name)

So - any suggestions would be great - but I really wanted to feel out the board on gut reactions to Quinn as a girls name as I don't frequent here too often to already know!

  • I like Quinn, but I don't think it flows with Linda - it comes out Quinlin Duh.

Is Linda Quinn out of the question?  That flows better, and you could call her Quinn...

  • I agree with PP, I really like the name Quinn.  However, it doesn't go with Linda.  Linda is more of a first name.  I like the suggestion of naming her Linda Quinn and then calling her Quinn.  Lots of people do that!

  • Thanks for all the responses - I've luckily got a few months to think about it - but I'm not going to cross this one off.

I'll have to think about putting Linda first - I don't know what my grandmother was thinking - she obviously didn't consider her someday grand children may want to use it as a middle name :)

I'm sure I'll be back again with some other options - hopefully!

  • I only associate Quinn with girls, but will admit it would be fine for a boy too.  DH LOVES this name and I actually love it too, but I am torn on the whole gender association thing and other people not knowing she's a girl by seeing her name on a list - that bothers me!  Yep - 37 weeks pg and still not set on a girl's name yet (we are team green).

I think Quinn Linda is fine...it's not the best flowing name I've ever heard but certainly not the worst and IMO it's a rare occasion when people actually address someone by their fn and mn at the same time.  I agree with pp's - in some cases family value is more important than flow.

I'm not sure many names will flow well with Linda as a mn. If you don't LOVE the name Quinn though, I'm not sure you should use it.

LOL, Quinn Catherine is on our list. Catherine is a family name.

DH thinks the double K sound is weird but I think it sounds fine.

  • I don't mind Quinn for a girl.  It's NMS, but I think it's cute.  For me, it doesn't flow well with Linda as a middle name.

     What about:

    Harper Linda

    Piper Linda

    Avery Linda

  • I really like it! I'm a fan of unisex names and this one is similar to my maiden name (not an exact copy, but enough that I considered it to honor that side of the family).

However, with Linda, you get that rhymey sounds with "Quin/Lin", but if that doesn't bother you - the name itself is great!

Katherine is a family name for us as well.  I think it's hard to come up with a middle name that flows nicely with Quinn and I like using a family name as a MN so I figured we couldn't be too picky Wink

  • Love it! I know it's originally a boy's name but I think it sounds totally feminine.

  • I love the name!! It is on our list but hate the fact that people think of a boy:(

  • I like the name, but it doesn't go with your MN.  Just curious, what was your mom's MN or maiden name?  Are either of those possibilities for a MN?

  • Cute name. You rarely say the first and middle name together, so to me, it's not a big deal if it doesn't flow perfectly. Just my opinion.

  • I've always liked Quinn for a girl. Very cute.

The flow isn't perfect, but I'd still use it. I much prefer Quinn as a FN over Linda.

  • I know both male and females with this name, but I prefer it for a boy.  As a girls name, I wouldn't pair it with Lynda.
