I just made my first appointment to see the actual OB/GYN. They said I would get a vaginal ultrasound at that visit. I will be 11 weeks then. Is a vaginal ultrasound the only way to see the baby at 11 weeks? I really don't like the idea of them sticking that thing up me and wriggling it around. I would much prefer the ultrasound on my belly. Any insight on what type of ultrasound other people had at 11 weeks would be appreciated. Thank you!
The first time they did just an abdominal u/s for me was at 12 weeks. I didn't have one at 11, but at 10 they did both the abdominal and transvag. They couldn't get good enough pictures with the abd so they went to the dildo cam.
My OB doesn't do early u/s unless medically necessary.
I had the n/t scan done with DD. I don't remember exactly how far along I was (had to be between 11-13 weeks) but that was not a transvag.
I had some issues last summer and had to have a number of transvag u/s. I personally found it quite painful and would opt out of one that wasn't necessary.
I actually prefer the transvaginal. I remember drinking water like it was going out of style then doing the pee pee dance forever waiting for my abdominal us. All the transvaginals I have had you did not have to hold your pee, much better!
Well, if it's possible for them to do the abdominal u/s at 12 weeks I might just ask them to reschedule it for one week later. It's my 10-12 week appointment anyway, so I don't think that should be too big a deal.
I had an ultrasound at 8 weeks and they saw everything through the abdomen....BUT, if you do end up having a vaginal one done it's not that bad....nothin more than a dilldo!
Every time I go they do an abdominal u/s first and then a transvaginal u/s. They can see the baby through the abdominal, but they can see it much, much better with the transvaginal.
You can decline any procedure you are not comfortable with, but if that's the case I'd decline the u/s altogether because all you will see is a fuzzy blob.
Yes, I realize all sorts of unpleasant things are going to happen down there. However, I had a lot of health problems when I was younger and after that experience I really try to avoid anything invasive if at all possible. I just want to rule out an ectopic pregnancy and ensure there's a heart beat at this stage. If they can do that without sticking something up me then I'd rather go that route. They're going to do another u/s at 20 weeks and they should be able to see a lot more then.
Your doctor should be able to hear a heartbeat through a Doppler at 11 weeks. So really there is no medical reason for an ultrasound, if you wish to avoid it.
I had a transvaginal ultrasound at 8 weeks 5 days. I believe almost all first trimester ultrasounds are transvaginal.
Honestly, I don't think anyone enjoys the dildo cam. You get on with it and get to see your LO. It's the clearest way to see baby at this point.

No they aren't, at least in my experience.
Mine either, I had a abdominal u/s at about 8weeks with my last pg and they could see things just fine.
If it were me I would refuse the transvaginal, unless the OB had a really convincing reason to do it. I had one when I was m/c a few years ago and it was really unpleasant.

I agree with your sentiment completely and other than a pap smear at my first appointment nothing was inserted into my vagina until my doctor checked for progress at my 39 week appointment. I personally wouldn't chose a doctor who practiced otherwise.
If you share you concerns with your doctor and your doctor is a reasonable human being I'm sure they'll assure you there is no reason for a transvaginal u/s at this point in time. By 11 weeks you should be able to hear the heartbeat with a doppler, just fine. We had an abdominal u/s done between 11-13 weeks for the n/t scan and the pictures were perfectly clear and anything the doctor needed to see she was able to see without any problem.
I don't doubt that if the pregnancy is ectopic you would have an inclination to such by now.
Some people are really dramatic on here. A t/v u/s is not invasive. You have sex don't you!? They let you insert it yourself. It is no big deal, at all, and I am a wimp. An amino or cvs is invasive. Come on. If you have some fear, you best start to ease into it as a baby, which is much bigger! Is coming out that way!

I've had both. Trust me when you see your baby it isn't as big of a deal. At 9 weeks they did it on my belly but I think it depends on your body style on how early they can do it that way.
Re: Type of Ultrasound
It's really not that bad. Relax.

This may not be true for everyone. The practice I go to only has one first trimester appointment so often its a dildo cam one.

How do you think the baby comes out?
Dildo cam seems like a good warm up to all the 3rd tri fingering...

most OBs will let you opt out of that. It's really not helpful and can just lead to infection.
