Parenting after a Loss

Our rainbow baby is here!

Hi ladies, sorry I haven't been around much but I've been just a *tad* busy.

The short version: Our rainbow baby was born on December 7 at 9:55 a.m. Her name is Violet Soleil and she was 6 lbs. 13 oz. She was born at 38 weeks exactly.

I had a difficult pregnancy. A bleeding scare at 12 weeks due to partial previa (which eventually resolved). Strict bed rest for 21 weeks due to PTL. I took p17 shots & ProCardia from 15-36 weeks. I had an emergency cerclage at 22w5d due to shortened/dilating cervix and spent a week in the hospital. We almost lost this baby the same way we lost Nathaniel. It is nothing short of a miracle that she is here.

The long version: I had my cerclage removed at 36w3d. On the night of the 6th, we stayed up late watching Netflix. It was 1 a.m. on the 7th by the time we decided to go to bed. I'd been contracting for months so that was nothing new but I did note that I was having more than usual. By 1:30 a.m., I decided to start timing the contractions to see if there was a pattern. I timed them for an hour at every 8 minutes, then every 6. Fortunately DH got an hour of sleep but the contractions were strong enough to keep me from dozing off. I woke DH and got in the shower at 2:30 a.m.. By the time I had undressed and entered the shower the contractions were every minute and a half! I showered quickly, dressed, and we called our friend who had agreed to come stay with DD until morning. We had a 20 minute drive to the hospital, so it was a good thing it was the middle of the night and there were no cars on the road. By the time we were settled in our room at L&D it was 3:45. The Dr. checked me; I was 4 cm and in LOTS of pain. They moved me to a delivery room and called the anesthesiologist. I waited for what felt like forever for my epidural. I was so worried there wouldn't be enough time for me to get an epidural; I delivered my son naturally (pre-term) and it was so painful and such a traumatic experience that I REALLY did not want to go natural this time. The nurses apparently thought I wouldn't last long enough for the epidural either because they told me so afterwards! I was screaming bloody murder during contractions; I'm sure the entire L&D floor heard me, LOL!

The epidural bought us some time. I was in absolute agony until I got it; there is no way I would've lasted more than another 30 minutes or so without it. I don't remember being in so much pain with either of my previous deliveries! I got the epidural around 5:30; they checked me afterwards and I was 8 cm. It's a good thing it bought us some time because I had tested positive for GBS at 36w so it gave them enough time to get both bags of IV antibiotics in before delivery.

Violet was born at 9:55 a.m. My labor was less than 8.5 hours from start to finish. One of the OB's we know and love came on duty at 8 a.m. so it was perfect. When she checked me just prior to delivery baby's head was only about an inch away! I only pushed 4 times and she was out. The Dr. held her up so that we could see that she was a girl and then they laid her on my bare chest. She nursed immediately and was absolutely perfect! We were so surprised to see her full head of dark hair since both our previous babies were blond.

They monitored me closely as I was a bleed risk, with a history of 2 pp hemorrhages. We came home on the 9th. So far so good (knock on wood). I've had 3 blood draws already to keep on eye on my liver enzymes which were elevated but are now decreasing. I have an OB appt. at 3 wks pp instead of the standard 6 as a precautionary measure. I'm still scared something is going to go wrong since my 1st pp hemorrhage was at 4 wks pp with my 1st DD, but hopefully this time will be different.

Violet is a mellow baby. Nursing well- MUCH easier the second time around. Still painful but not for as long, and this time when I developed blisters I had perspective to know that they wouldn't last long. Also- gel pads- why did I not know about these last time??? Violet sleeps for up to 5 hours at a stretch, though not consistently but I'll take it! It's such a different experience having a newborn for the 2nd time; she's the easy part- it's the 3 year old that's the challenge! She loves her little sister but can be a little aggressive with her affections ;)

Hopefully I will be able to jump on here a little more frequently once things settle down. Just so thankful Violet arrived safely!!!

  • I am late to the party, and commented on the Loss Board post, but wanted to comment here too that I AM SO HAPPY FOR YOU AND YOUR FAMILY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Hugs,
    Jenn

We are so thankful that our second daughter, Lillian Elizabeth "Lily", was born healthy and happy on February 11, 2013.  We love her to pieces.

We lost our first daughter, Hannah Grace on May 4, 2011.  She was buried on May 14 during a beautiful service at my home church. We are grateful that if she could not be here with us, that she is healed and whole with the Lord. We look forward to the day when we will get to meet her. We love her so much.
