4 wks pregnant with bad cramps- normal?

Hi all! I just found out on Thursday that I am pregnant! Yay! For the past week I have had very bad cramps, just like period cramps but more intense than I have experienced before. Even keeping me up at night! The nurse said it is ok as long as I am not bleeding, which I am not, but I can't help but wonder about it.

Has anyone else experienced such cramping in early pregnancy?

  • I had cramping too around the same time. As long as you have zero bleeding, you should be fine. :)
Married my BEST FRIEND on December 1, 2007. Started TTC in March 2008. Found out we were expecting our first child in October 2008 - but had a m/c in December 2008 - resulting in a d&e. Met with a RE in May 2009 and set a plan - but conceived unexpectedly on our own! Our precious little Sophia was born on February 9, 2010! Lilypie Third Birthday tickers

  • I'm only about 3 weeks right now, and I have random minor cramping which has started to worry me...so I'm also wondering if others have had this happen....

  • It's normal.  Your uterus is growing like crazy so you're definitely going to have cramping.  Now, if it's sharp, double you over PAIN, that's different and you should call your doctor but cramping is normal.

  • Cramping, even slightly painful, can be completely normal and you'll likely experience it throughout your pregnancy. Things are changing in there right now and eventually will be stretching out to make room for your LO. It's good to check in with your doctor on it as it sounds like you have, but to the nurse's point it's good that you aren't bleeding with it. GL!

  • Thanks guys. Glad to know I am not the only one. It gets the worst at night, it wakes me up and hurts sooo bad for about 10mns but then goes away.

Hey, I am just so happy I am pregnant- this little guy (or girl) can do whatever it wants to me! :)

  • I had cramps for about 2 weeks prior to getting my BFP.  I thought AF was coming... Anyway, they are finally going away.

  • Hi!

I also had really bad cramping, keeping me up at night at 4 weeks to 6 weeks. I still have it occasionally but not as severe. Hang in there, it will get better! :)

  • I'm 6 weeks and I have been having this since week 4 probably. It's on and off throughout the day and much worse at night and when i wake up. What I have found works the best is laying in a comfortable position and drinking LOTS of water. It could be that you are getting dehydrated. When I go for a couple hours without drinking it gets worse. Hopefully this helps and hopefully we both start feeling better!

  • I'm 8 weeks and started having severe cramping over 5 weeks ago (before I even knew I was pregnant).  It was so bad that I would wake up multiple times every night and eventually started sleeping with a ice pack on my stomach (which for some reason, seemed to help).  The doctor put me on duphaston and the cramps decreased.  Then recently, I started bleeding for a few days.  The pain became so intense I could barely walk.  I went to the doctor and had another ultrasound. I was convinced we'd had a miscarriage.  Luckily, we didn't.  I've got a few issues (fibroids/endometriosis, etc) and the doctor thinks that may be causing my issues, but he doesn't seem really sure.  He's increased my dosage and the cramps have significantly decreased and the bleeding has completely stopped.   So, even though severe cramps suck, you don't have to expect the worst.

Good luck and hope you are feeling better soon!

This happened to me for the first couple of weeks after my BFP - the pain woke me up multiple times a night. It was terrible - but thankfully it was just a phase that my body seems to have gotten over.

Yes me too and I went to the doctor and was fine.  Your only concern would need to be extreme pain and possible shoulder pain, which could be ectopic. As long as its just cramps you are ok!
