Anyone not sleeping through the night?

When I went back to work, and Blake was 3m, he started sleeping through the night.  It was amazing.  Until about a month ago....he is now up at least twice a night.  Right now he has a cough, which I think is part of it, but I'm sooo tired!  I told him he couldn't let me remember what sleep was like, and then take it away again! :)   Is anyone else LO not sleeping through the night?  Typically, he will eat and then just go to bed.  He's in the 99 percentile for weight so it's not like he needs the food.  Plus, he gets half a tub of veggie and cereal around 6p, and then 6oz of milk at 7pm which is bedtime.  Suggestions on how to get him to sleep through the night?

Re: Anyone not sleeping through the night?

  • We haven't slept through the night yet. not once. ever. no matter how much I feed him.  He goes to bed at 7:30, up at 12:30, 3:30, and then we have to get up at 5:30.  It's killing me, but I also know I have very little time left with him this small. so I take the cuddles and know I will get sleep someday.

    Good luck!!!!

  • yeah...we have not slept through the night yet. for a while she was getting up twice in the night and that was heavenly. we're back to 3 or 4 times. last night was, down at 7:30, up at 10, 1,3 and 6 and then up for good at 8. My pedi said not to worry about sleeping through the night till 9 months Tongue Tied so we're just going with the flow for now. i can see sleep in my future but its a long ways off yet.

  • Kate usually gets up once a night. The time isn't consistent either...some nights she'll wake at 12:30, others she'll wake at 5:00.
  • We also have never ever never slept through the night. I have no intentions to sleep train any time soon, so we'll just keep going with the flow over here.

  • Mia is still waking up at least once a night, sometimes twice a night. She always eats when she wakes up and the times aren't consistent so I figure she must need it. I'm tired but enjoy the snuggle time.

If you want your DS to start sleeping through the night then you should look into sleep training. Quite a few moms on this board seem to have had success with both Ferber and Sleepeasy.
  • No STTN going on here. DD2 wakes usually once or twice, along with my older two!

  • L used to but when we did the crib transition she stopped. We are back to bed sharing and she still is waking up. She just woke up now! Normally she will get up off and on from 3-7. Since she is right next to me I can pop the paci in her mouth and she's back to sleep quickly most of the time.

  • Yup, I've been doing the 2 times a night thing again as well. She would do a full night every once in a while and most of the time 1 time a night. Then she started teething and went back to 2 times a night. Sigh.

  • 7:30 to 12:30 is 5 hours and therefore considered STTN! I would love to get a five hour stretch!

  • DS STTN from about 12 to 13 weeks, I should have enjoyed it more!  He was up several time each night ever since, but we started sleep training with SleepEasy and weaned him down to just one feeding. I switched this to my bedtime (LO goes to sleep around 7:30), so around 11 I dream feed him and then he will make it until just before 7 (which is awesome!!!).
  • We have never STTN.  Not even once.  He is up 2-3 times per night and comes into bed with me around 6 when DH gets up so I can try to get him to sleep a bit more and I can sleep in a while longer.

  • Never STTN. Even on a good night he will wake up twice. We've overcome a lot of sleep issues so I'm actually fine with this!

  • Wish I had some. DD has never slept through the night (as I define it, meaning when I want to sleep, lol). She has done an 8 hour stretch once, but it started at 7, so I still had to wake up in the middle of the night. She normally wakes twice, but has recently started waking three times to nurse and once to cuddle. Ugh, I really hope once she learns to crawl (she is on the verge) she will settle down and sleep better.

  • DS slept through the night for a few weeks this summer, but then we moved and 4 mo. wakeful hit at the same time. I got into the habit of bringing him in bed with me because he was impossible to get back to sleep.

This weekend he slept from 9-5 for the first time in weeks and I think for us the trick is letting 9 be his natural bedtime.

  • Sorry it took me so long to respond back.  I went to bed at 8:30p last night, and was working all day today and then we went 'trick or treating' to the gmas.

Well I'm glad I'm not alone!!  I think it's actually worse that he WAS sleeping through the night and then decided not to do it anymore.  lol.  I'm not really interested in CIO, so we'll probably just go with the flow, but it's just been hard especially lately.  And it's harder now that I'm working 10-12hr days.  Oh well.  We'll see how it goes.  I just felt like we were probably the only ones still dealing with this!

Just b/c he is big doesn't mean he isn't hungry...

DS does not STTN and he is over 26 pounds at 7m.  He nurses vigorously at least 1x a night, sometimes 2x.

If you want, you can read Ferber's book or another sleep training book and learn about sleep association and sleep cycles to figure our why your DS is waking and then go from there with CIO or other night weaning methods.

I have had interrupted sleep pretty much since DD was born in July 2010 (and I'm sure there are moms who have been at it longer than that) - you get used to it.

I totally agree (except mine is just since Nov. 2010!)  Well actually, DS did drop his MOTN wake-ups in Jan. or Feb., but by that time I was giant and had to pee every hour at night.  DD wakes up once or twice to eat.  I'm okay with it because it is a vast improvement from 4 or 5 wake-ups, which is what she was doing a month ago!  I didn't do anything other than feed her when she was hungry, not jumping up to go get her at the first fuss, and just waiting it out.

  • indeed she does not STTN!! Ha.

in her six months of life, twice she slept from 830 to 530am. It was magical.

Usually she is up twice a night. It's been much worse and it's been better. If she wakes once I consider that a great night. Last night she went down at 9pm, woke at 10pm whining and such, she seemed to be in pain because even when I picked her up she kept complaining, it was pitiful. So I just lay with her, nipple in the mouth until she fell asleep again. Then she didn't wake until 430 to eat which was amazing!

In a weird way I don't WANT her to STTN because then I feel like she doesn't need me as much anymore. Despite being tired and stuff, I love our MOTN snuggles. Her little wails for food and comforting her is a lovely thing to me, but I would like for it to only happen once a night haha.

  • E has only slept through the night a handful of times.  Still waking up at least twice.  I thought for sure she would be STTN by now!  She goes down for bed after a long fight of sleep around 8:30, back up at 11pm, then again around 3-4.  Im up for work about 5:50am and sometimes she nurses at that time too, which means I have to skip the shower.  UGH!
