When to tell work

Hi Ladies!

So my boss is currently evaluating our hiring needs for the coming year and I'm starting to feel guilty about not telling him about my pregnancy. We just brought in a really strong candidate today for an interview, but my boss isn't sure yet if we definitely need the additional staff and is looking into alternatives including interns.

I'll be 8 weeks on Thursday and I'm wondering if I should tell my boss now even though it's early so we don't miss out on an excellent candidate.  Obviously my boss will have plenty of time from Thanksgiving (when I originally planned to tell work), but considering I'm planning on maximizing my maternity leave (I think I'm eligible for up to 24 weeks in NJ?) and then reducing my hours once I come back, I feel bad knowing all this and not saying anything now.

What should I do??

Re: When to tell work

  • Tell him but let him know not to tell anyone else yet.  He'll appreciate the head's up, and will probably be more willing to work with you and creating a flexible schedule if he feels like you were totally up front with him.

  • I told work right after Thanksgiving last year (after we told family) at about 11.5 weeks. I am small and started to show really early (but it was one of the instances where people were probably questioning if I was pregnant or just gaining weight).

If you tell your boss, just make sure that he knows you aren't really announcing yet, so that it stays underwraps until you want the news to get out, and explain why you are mentioning it now instead of waiting.

This. As a manager I would appreciate this info in this situation.

  • I told work at 8 weeks, because I was feeling terrible, and making appointments for prenatal visits. If I was your boss, I'd be thrilled you told me with everything going on in your OP.

  • I think it's a good idea to tell. I'm almost 9 weeks and I told my boss last week. I don't plan on telling everyone else until 12 weeks but I thought it was important to let him know. I visit a lot of job sites and at times I'm in hazardous conditions. Now that I'm pregnant, I want to limit some of the things I do so I had to tell my boss. He was very understanding.

Also you should tell your boss so you can check on the maternity leave. I'm in NJ too and my leave is 12 weeks.

I agree. Just make sure to tell him it's still erly, but you wanted him to be able to make n informed decision with all the information. I would appreciate this as well.

  • Perhaps try to persuade him to hire the excellent candidate not based on the fact you're pregnant, but because the office can benefit so much from him/her.  I don't like being sneaky about pregnancies to harm the office or out of lack of concern, but bottom line is it's your news and you have every right to share it when you feel comfortable doing so.

  • I told my boss when I found out, of course she (is a she and also a grandma so she's more sensitive to stuff like this and my work is family-friendly) knew about my specialist visits and surgery (ovarian drilling) so it made sense to let her know it was successful (and she said she'd been wondering because I looked "off"). I have to let her know when I have doctor's visits anyway so it makes sense to put her in the loop. As for the rest of work, other than my close lady co-workers, they don't know. I plan on telling them this week. Since I do all the art for the entire company, they need to have a "crisis plan" as I like to call it, in place for next year.
