Pregnant after a Loss

Update on us...long and maybe tmi in parts

Another long Update: Ashton continues to thrive. They removed his sugar water iv yesterday, so the only thing he still has at this point is his feeding tube. He is doing well maintaining his own temp, so they were planning on moving him out of the isolete into an open cot tonight. He is taking his feeds very well whether formula or breast milk. My supply is almost enough that he doesn't need formula at all. Hopefully he'll be 100% breast milk in a few days. Also found out today that his length (at 3d old- so likely at birth) was 19.25 inches and 5lbs 10oz at 32w3d. Carter was 9lbs and 20 inches at 40w4d. Ashton is definitely longer in the legs arms and fingers. Me: Physically, the nightmare continues. I finally was able to call my OB today and they fit me in because I am in ridiculous amounts of pain and it should be getting better, not worse by now. Turns out all the straining to have a BM that caused my contrax to start has caused an (sorry if TMI) anal fissure, which has made having a BM since Ashton's birth off the charts painful. I also have pain when I urinate, which may be caused by irritation from the catheter, but it may also be a uti and last but not least, while my incision is healing up nicely, there appear to be pockets of fluid just to the sides of and above the incision site. Doc says that although I have no outward signs of infection, he thinks one is brewing. He warned that my incision may partially open up so the infection can drain and I may require wound care. He is sending me for bloodwork and a urine analysis tomorrow am. I am to go back for followup on Friday. He put me on high dose antibiotics to combat the expected belly infection and that same drug will help with any bladder infection. He said the fissure could take a very long time to heal, but they can't really deal with that until I can have regular soft movements, so I am to continue taking colace 2x a day and a laxative 2.x per day. Recovery could be slow in the butt department. All of this is taking a toll emotionally, but I am trying to battle through, just like Ashton has done. If he can deal so well with the hand he was dealt, then mom will just suck it up and carry on. My boys need me strong and healthy and dammit, I am going to get there sooner, rather than later.

Re: Update on us...long and maybe tmi in parts

  • First off, I'm glad Ashton's doing great!

But as for you, oh no in all departments!! That sounds absolutely horrible!! I hope that they're able to get the infections under control so that they can concentrate on helping the fissure because that sounds incredibly painful.

  • Well, you definitely win the award again this week for whose got it the worst!  I'm so happy that Ashton is continuing to kick proverbial asss, but man, what a nightmare you've got going on with your own recovery.  Major prayers that things settle down for you ASAP and everything from here on out is sunshine and puppy dogs.  We are all rooting for you!

  • Oh honey, I'm so sorry your recovery has turned into such a pain in the a$$.  (Did I get just a little smile from you?)  No, in all seriousness, I'm sending all the good recovery thoughts I have to you and little Ashton, althought he seems to be quite the awesome little fighter.  Not that it makes it any easier, but I know you're a strong woman who can get through all of this and will come out of the tunnel to beautiful sunshine and a rainbow.  *hugs*

  • So happy little Ashton is thriving!

As for you...that does NOT sound like fun.  Anal fissure?  Just the words sound painful, and the thought of an infection even more painful.  Glad your doc is on top of it, and sending good thoughts to your immune system to kick it into high gear!!

  • Oh my word, talk about drawing the short straw! Yikes! I am so sorry your recovery is so awful. I think you deserve a few totally boring years (and lots of baby snuggles!) with all you have been through.

Ashton sounds like a rockstar (just like his mom)! It seems like he is on the fast track home.

Big ((hugs)). I hope things settle down soon and you get to feeling better.

  • Wow, you poor thing.  :(  I'm so glad Ashton is doing well, but man...owie on your part.  I've taken care of a few patients with anal fissures (sometimes common after chemo induced colitis).  Can you doctor prescribe you some topical lidocaine for it, right before you go poop?  That might give you some local relief.

    Thinking of you guys!
