anyone still sleeping on their back?

This is my second pregnancy, I'm 20 weeks, and I cannot for the life of me sleep on my side. I've tried and I've used the pillows and nothing is working. Things turned out okay with ds, so it is what it is I guess. Wondering if anyone else is going to be a back-sleeper as well. I keep trying to convince myself that it's okay.

Re: anyone still sleeping on their back?

  • I cannot seem to stay off my back while sleeping. I have never slept on my side and it's sooo uncomfortable! I'm going to mention it to my OB next week though. I don't get dizzy or lightheaded when on my back, so I'm thinking right now it's okay.

  • I'm 20w3d and I have a hard time sleeping on my side as well. I tried the pillow between my legs, and while it helps for back pains, it wakes me up every time I turn because it won't follow my body. I'm just so much more comfortable on my back.

  • I've been falling asleep on my side, but I will wake up on my back. My hips start to hurt after sleeping on my side too long and by morning, my back is the most comfortable position. I asked my OB about it and he told me not to worry too much, just prop myself up on the left side if I needed to. So, I think it's fine.

  • I'm with you. Every night I start out on my Left side where I would normally fall asleep but my belly is in the way and it feels weird and different so I toss and turn till I fall asleep and then wake up in the morning on my back. I do move to a side when I realize it but I'm not going to stress out about it. I'm comfortable and sleeping.

All of this. I'm normally a stomach sleeper, but I've been making every effort to sleep on my left side. I start out there with a pillow between my legs, but I'll wake up feeling like I'm still putting too much pressure on my stomach or I'll wake up on my back. Just doing my best!

  • I posted about this a couple weeks ago bc my MW said it really didn't matter bc the blood goes to your brain before baby so if there was a problem you would wake up. I don't know of I trust this advice 100 but I think it's not as big of a deal as it is made out to be.

  • I sleep however I am comfortable.  I finally got DD to sleep through the night when she was 17 months old - I'm going to get a good night of sleep now before the new baby comes.  If it means I'm on my back then I'm on my back Wink

I usually lie on my side/tummy with one leg propped up on a pillow.  I can't sleep on my tummy now, so it's sort of at an angle where my stomach isn't being squashed.  This position is going to kill my back later on in the pregnancy, so I'm just enjoying it for now.

  • I'm a back sleeper.  With DD I slept mainly on my back up until the morning I went into labor with her and never had a single problem--no lightheadedness or anything.

I usually go to sleep on my side, but I wake up on my back and MH tells me when he gets up I'm usually on my back.  I'm not worried about it.

  • Yes! It is the only way I can get comfortable. I am usually a stomach sleeper and I do not really like sleeping on my side. I will ask my OB tomorrow at my appointment what she thinks. I am assuming she will say whatever is comfortable, do it.

  • every night!  My dr. said it was ok still.  You can't worry about everything!!  As long as I'm sleeping, I'm happy!

  • I woke up this morning flat on my back despite the plethora of pillows and support in front, in back, above, below, and in between.....

Guess my body will move how it wants to when I am sleeping!

  • I wish!! I roll onto my back and it's more comfortable for about 10 minutes, and then it starts getting super uncomfortable and a bit painful, so I have to sleep on my side.

I think it's fine to sleep on your back as long as it's comfortable. I've heard that your body will tell you when it's time to stop.

My doctor says the same thing: That you would wake up, unable to breathe, before it hurts the baby and not to stres.

  • I am sitting sleeping on my back and on my stomach, with a pillow propped under one side to keep the weight off my belly. My MW said to sleep however was comfortable and that my body would let me know if back sleeping was a problem. Funny thing is I have slept SO much better since I stopped worrying about it.
  • I do, and a lot of times even if I sleep on my side I wake up on my back. I heard that you'll wake up if you're not supposed to be on your back but I get scared because I'm a really heavy sleeper!!

  • I put a pillow on each side and go back and forth all night.  I don't sleep great, I am a back sleeper normally but I just can't do it, it makes me too nervous.  Though I have to say, the longer I do the side thing the more and more I am getting used to it....but it does take some time. I got my info from the American Pregnancy Association website so that is what I am following.

Another idea might be a recliner if you have one to avoid being completely flat.

We are so thankful that our second daughter, Lillian Elizabeth "Lily", was born healthy and happy on February 11, 2013.  We love her to pieces.

We lost our first daughter, Hannah Grace on May 4, 2011.  She was buried on May 14 during a beautiful service at my home church. We are grateful that if she could not be here with us, that she is healed and whole with the Lord. We look forward to the day when we will get to meet her. We love her so much.

  • I do.  Asked my ob about it yesterday and she stated as long as I am comfortable it is fine.  During the third trimester it may not be as comfy but you will know if it is or isn't.  I try to go to sleep on my side and it does not last long.  I always wake up on my back.

  • I fall asleep on my side and end up waking up on my back as well.  I just can't seem to stay on my side all night.  When DH wakes up in the middle of the night he just sort of rolls me back over to my side, haha.

  • so I usually sleep on my stomach. Right now I am sleeping kind of on my tummy, but turned to the side. However, apparently I make my way to my back. DH hates it because I guess I snore really loudly when I am on my back. Who knew? I am so uncomfortable on my back, but I guess baby is making me flip!

  • I spend about half the night on my back and half on my side.  Your body will let you know when to move, I wouldn't worry about it!

  • I change so much through the night, but I feel like I'm on my back a lot still too.
