Food Allergy

Questions for those with confirmed food allergy

How old was your LO when they started to show signs of their food allergy?

Did you have both a skin and blood test done?

Did anyone's LO have a colonoscopy and the biopys showed allergy cells?

My son's first colonscopy at 12 months showed that he did not have a food allergy. His second colonoscopy a few months later showed both non allergy white cells but also allergy cells consistent with a protein allergy. However those allergy cells were within the normal range but on the high end of normal.

We're on our 4th week of fruits and veggies and he's still having loose bloody stools. Very frustrated and not convinced he even has a food allergy.

We have allergy testing set up but can't get in until October.

Re: Questions for those with confirmed food allergy

  • DD was tested at 4 months old.  The only food she was tested for at the time was diary and soy.  She came back positive for dairy.  She has shown sensativities and reactions to other things and we go back for more testing at 12 months (unless some dramatic reaction occurs).

From day one she showed a reaction to dairy.  We just did not know it.  She came home and had horrible baby acne by day 2.  But it was not baby acne.. it was eczema and just kept getting worse and worse.  By 4 months the eczema was crazy bad - bleeding/ oozing.  Blood showed up in her diaper at that point and she was always congested.  Once she was diagnosed.  The blood disappeared right away after changing from BM to alimentum (I was BFing -- but she kept reacted to things other than milk and I just could not figure it all out).  The congestion took it's time but is gone now.  And I would say by  6 months is when her exzema finally got under control and she no longer woke up with blood on her sheets or onsie.

We would like to do blood test in addition to the skin test that we have scheduled at 12 months.  She had hive reactions to rice and peanuts.  Sensativity to papaya.

I'm sorry you are going through all this - sucks that you can't get an appointment earlier than October.

    How old was your LO when they started to show signs of their food allergy? Eczema began to get bad around month 4. No other obvious signs until she tried yogurt at 7 months and broke out. Did you have both a skin and blood test done? Allergist did skin. Testing and our pedi wanted blood so we did both. Did anyone's LO have a colonoscopy and the biopys showed allergy cells? No one's mentioned a colonoscopy.nbsp;
Good luck w everything. It is agonizing not knowing what is causing the problems.

  • Thanks for the reply. Wow, sounds like your LO went through a lot. I'm glad you were able to pin point the dairy allergy and make some changes.
  • My first started showing food allergy symptoms at 1 month.  I was BF'ing and could not produce enough milk.  He was started on baby foods at 21 days old.  It didn't take long to learn that he had a sensitivity/allergy to apples, pears, and rice cereal.  Those caused sores in his mouth, bloody stools and a hot rash all over.   We worked closely with his pediatrician and discovered the cause of the symptoms by process of elimination.  Once we knew what to avoid, the health issues faded but it did take time - longer than I thought it would/should anyway.

At 1 year, the pediatrician did the blood test to check if the allergy/senstivity was over.  The test still showed an active reaction.  The skin test for those 3 items was done at 4 years old and came back non-reactive - he had outgrown the allergy.

Prayers for a quick resolution and answers for you and your son.

They all do.  And it's so hard to watch.  I keep in mind that other babies with a dairy allergy end up hospitalized sometimes. Her allergy is mild in comparison (not to me though). But I do hope you get down to what's going on with your LO soon.  Good luck and keep us posted.

  • Well we got in early to do some allergy testing yesterday. They took blood and we should get the results next week. The immunologist/allergist doesn't think its a food allergy either but we're just eliminating the possibility. The doctors are now calling my son the puzzle that nobody can figure out. I'll let you know the results when I find out.
  • Just wanted to give an update on the allergy testing. All came back negative with the blood tests. Not sure what the next step is, I think all the doctors are out of ideas.
