Trying to Get Pregnant

Zoloft when Pregnant

I am going to be TTC in a few days.  I'm on Cymbalta for depression and my doctor said it is new so they don't know a lot about it so she is switching me to Zoloft.  But I am still concerned...has anyone taken this while pregnant and or breastfeeding?  There are commercials stating it causes birth defects, but my doctor said it is safe.  When I picked up the prescription the paper says when taken in the 3rd trimester it may make the baby dependant on it....

  • You might want to ask over on the first tri board, maybe some of those ladies have experience. I think I've heard that Zoloft is one of the safer drugs to take while pregnant.

  • This truly is a question for your OB or GP. It all depends on the class of drug when it comes to pregnancy. Your doctor will have to weigh the pros and cons for your individual situation.

All that being said, I found this from Mayo Clinic.

  • I took zoloft in my 3rd tri only because of OCD and anxiety issues. That was spring of 2008. Since then, I'm pretty certain that they've decided that it isn't safe during pregnancy - however, in some cases it's still used. This is very much a personal, individual circumstances question to take up with your doctor. I would press for more information.

  • From www.drugs.com:  FDA pregnancy category C. Tell your doctor right away if you become pregnant while taking Zoloft. Sertraline may cause heart defects or serious lung problems in a newborn if you take the medication during pregnancy. However, you may have a relapse of depression if you stop taking your antidepressant. Do not start or stop taking sertraline during pregnancy without your doctor's advice.

I would talk to your doctor about it.

  • I was on Zoloft when I became pregnant with 2. I weened off in my 1st trimester. They said I could take it if absolutely necessary but told me of something called a "Zoloft baby". Basically your newborn is on an antidepressant as well and is somewhat sedated until it gets out of their system. I chose to go through the withdrawal instead of the baby. But if it's impairative you take it then you should.

  • I'm on the generic of zoloft. When we started TTC, my Dr said it is fine for now. They may try to ween me off of it once we are KU, but even then, it would be okay, even if you just cut the dosage down (depending on how much you take). I know every dr is different and it is worrisome not knowing if it will harm the baby. I think once I'm KU I will try and go off of it.

    GL! :)

  • I used to take zoloft. My Dr said not to take it while pregnant, but that I could resume after birth even if I breastfed. I chose neither because my anxiety dropped, but I'm sure its a case by case, or even doctor by doctor issue.
  • I haven't had this issue personally, but all I know is I have seen a crap ton of commercials advising women who were pregnant while taking Zoloft may have a lawsuit if their child was born with birth defects, etc. So no, I wouldn't take it. However, you and your doc need to come to a conclusion on this together. For some people with severe depression, it's worth the risk (we're talking committing suicide, etc if taken off the meds). So yeah, as PPs have said, have a serious talk with your docs about it.
  • As of today I took my last Cymbalta and am scheduled to start the Zoloft tomorrow.  I am definetely calling my doctor.  I really don't feel comfortable taking the Zoloft during the whole pregnancy.  I want to wean myself off asap.  I was on 30 mg Cymbalta and the Zoloft will be 50 mg.  I did already ask her if it was safe and she said yes and that untreated depression can be harmful to me or the baby.  However, my depression was never that bad, I was just moody.  I can deal with that. I don't want it to hurt my baby.

  • I just wouldn't take anything aside from Tylenol. It's just not worth the risk. Maybe start to wean yourself off while getting into a yoga and meditation routine that is known to reduce stress and anxiety. Good luck

And this is why you need to talk to your doctor, rather than random internet peeps. In some cases, it is very much worth the risk. Yoga and meditation don't always help with depressive and anxiety disorders. If they did, I'd be OCD free.

  • Please read my blog :-)  (clicky below)  First of all, this is a decision only you can make, and you must decide how to weigh the risks.  In some cases, it is the only way.  However, it is not ALWAYS the only way.

I am extremely skeptical of anything deemed "safe"--because too frequently that which is believed to be safe at the time turns out not be later.  I think someone else posted about the commercials that say "did you take Zoloft while you were pregnant and now your kid is all kinds of messed up?  Well now you can sue the s*it outta your doctor!"  I think I would rather have had a healthy baby than receive money from a lawsuit.

with that said, I know people who did take Zoloft while they were pregnant and/or nursing, and their children are perfectly happy and healthy.

I did a lot of research before coming off my meds, and I am happy to say that I was able to go off and remain healthy, something I never thought I would be able to do.  I say do a ton of research.  Then research some more.  you will be so glad you did!

     Good luck!!! :-)

And yes, I'm with Jersey.  You can do all the meditation and yoga in the world and it won't correct the fact that you have an illness.  Amandarins, while I'm sure you didn't mean it this way, telling people with actual physiological psychological illness to meditate and do yoga can come off as a little insulting.  Trust me when I say most of us have already tried that and met with little or no success.

  • I work at a dr's office and as far as I have heard of it's a NO. It can cause too many problems. I'm sure every Doctor takes different things into account with every patient so it's really their call, but the physician's where I work don't. Prozac is considered safe until the 3rd trimester, or that's what I've been told. I'd atleast call and ask if there are any other alternatives to be on the safe side.

BTW- I am just stating what I have observed/heard/etc at work. Talk to your Dr. before taking yourself off of any medications or anything like that :)

    TTC since November 2011
  • I take Zoloft, and plan to continue to do so throughout pregnancy.  I used to be on fluvoxamine, which I preferred, but isn't as tested during pregnancy and thus might not be as safe.
It doesn't cause defects. It has been shown that when somebody is taking zoloft while pregnant there is an increased probability of a baby having a birth defect. It doesn't mean that if you take it when pregnant that your baby is going to have a birth defect.
Compared to other similar drugs, it's considered safer.  Is it more risky than taking nothing? Maybe.  Personally, I'm a big freaking mess when I'm not taking it, and I would be a crappy wife and mother without it.
